Well it might take some time, Yes and it will kinda ruin your chances a bit. But if your a High rank and you got banned then you will lose that rank and be a Member.

If there is a valid reason for you to get banned, it would definitely cripple your chances of becoming a staff member - I have never seen it happen and most probably never will.

With tobs. Not gonna happen. Generally banned members do not Apply for staff. Heck they probably won't get trusted

Happened before on classic, couple of times. People change you know, you can't reject them just because they made some mistakes in the past.

This. There are some Operators who accidentally griefed and got banned, but they became operators in the end by proving themselves.

Anyway, the point is that you can get a high rank, it just means you have to stand out more from the rest of the crowd.

There are SMP moderators who have been banned. I can think of one. Tell your friend you can get ranked up. It will take much more time and more trust.

I was banned because of a glitch with the /ban mod, and I'm trusted now. 

My personal opinion is this. You got banned and they were nice enough to let you back on the server. Just play the game and try not to get banned again. What happens happens and we shouldn't dwell on the past for too long. you could be forgiven however it will take time.

so true

not sure if people remember, but relkeb nearly got banned as a guest
his brother was on his account, had a hitler skin and built swastica's and ran around trolling everyone.
later relkeb explained it was his brother. hes now an admin. if something bad happens, it doesnt mean all chances of getting
a high rank are ruined. you just have to show you will follow the rules.
