Plugin: Shortify
« on: March 04, 2013, 04:35:04 pm »
http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/shortify/

Basically, this plugin shortens links automatically. Minecraft's chat limits links/single chat lines to 48 characters, therefore making tinyurl needed alot. This will help when people are trying to share images or videos etc with each other when the link is too long for chat. I use this plugin on my server, and it's pretty great in my opinion. There is probably a half second delay when the link is posted and shortened, but it's still fast.

Here's the examples on the dev bukkit page the developer made:

With multiple link support:

I like this, and I dont see any reason to not have it. Though its not gonna be a priority most likely.

The only problem I see with this is that people won't know where they're actually being linked to. This shouldn't be too big of an issue.

Maybe they should make a workaround for that.. hmm..

Well when you do open a link in Minecraft, it clearly states "Do not open links from people you do not trust", so it's really your own risk, and if it's a friend showing you something, they're probably not posting anything bad.

Didn't read through the actual bukkit thread, but did a search for "Open", which came up with nothing, making me guess that it isn't open sourced. This means that there is a tiny chance we'll be getting it, as far as I understand. I really don't see Optical and Cschurz coding this in the near future. There are more important things to be done.

for future reference claw you just need to look on the right side of their bukkit page in the little facts box
and you're looking for this little bit:

License
GNU General Public License version 3 (GPLv3)

the gnu gpl means it's open source. it's free to copy, modify or distribute by anyone, you could even alter the code and charge people for it, so long as you attach the gnu gpl and make it open source for anyone who should purchase it from you.

This looks good but as Wyboth said... What is being linked is never a certain thing. But the same goes with using tinyurl or goo.gl. But whether it's down tot he user to be aware of the risks and they can obviously choose to click it. Has been that way with all shortened url links given in chat

The fact that you cannot tell where the link will take you is too large a risk for the small inconvenience of having large links in chat from time to time. Don't think this will be implemented.

See, I thought about this and it was brought up, but is it the same thing as goo.gl or tinyurl..  :-\

The fact that this COULD be used to cause harm shouldn't scare you out of using it. In fact, this caution would not help in the least bit because if someone were to want to trick someone into clicking on a malicious link, they could just manually plug the link into tinyurl and post that.
