One of the reasons it is so slow is that you have all your stuff on the desktop. Try filing them into folders

How does having desktop icons make it slow?

Dunno, my dad told me, but it seems to be true as some of my friends who have 100s of icons on their desktop have way slower computers then me even though they are mostly the same. I know some genius like Nick is going to tell me I'm all wrong and I am a noob now


EDIT: off Yahoo answers.

Anything you put on your desktop screen (when you boot up you see them right there) takes memory resources. The more things you have the more memory is used.... same goes for windows backgrounds, they take up resources...

Memory is what runs your open applications. If memory resources are used up with all these tiny things, and fancy backgrounds, and bunch of un-necessary things loaded on startup (look for startup cop and run it to remove those).. take up valuable resources and makes your computer run slower.

Having a bunch of stuff on your desktop will not slow your computer down at all. They are mostly shortcuts and reall small in size. And yes, the more icons you have the more memory they take up but unless you are really low on RAM it shouldn't be a problem at all.

And there can be many reasons an old computer runs faster than a new one. For example each version of windows takes a different amount of memory to run. So if you have 1gB ram on windows xp it will run faster than 1GB on windows 7 (which im not even sure you can run windows 7 with 1GB)

which means my life has ended, untill i get 300 quid for a new MB + GPU + CPU + RAM
