My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a show created by Lauren Faust based off of a Hasbro toy line.
A few days after MLP's first episode was aired, it was brought up on the /co/ (or /b/, don't really know) board on 4chan.org
That's where it got it's large amount of fans.
