You do realize that lava isn't a renewable source unlike water, so there are only a limited amount of lava source blocks as there are coal.Lava would be nice to smelt huge bundles of resources for large projects, but for something small or practical, coal and blaze rods are more effective.

I cannot imagine the Nether looking like a lava-layered canyon near the bottom Flowing lava is much worse than a stationary lake, since that uses more animations itself.
