Now, let's answer your questions:

Minecraft has 2 flavors: Classic and SMP.

Classic is free but outdated Minecraft, which SMP is the newest and shiniest but relatively pricey version.

If you are not willing to pay, play Classic. If you want to try the game before you buy, download Minecraft Demo.

If you buy the game, visit minecraftwiki.net. It seriously helped me with my first Minecraft experience.

Yeah I suggest you play on classic first, because you can learn build stuff and some of the basic commands also.

its ok to buy the game, just dont get addicted to the smp server. CLASSIC FTW!!

When I first started playing minecraft, I played on the classic server and got the feel. Then once I fully understood, I bought the full version. I personally like the full version better but lots of people prefer classic. Basically Classic is all about building and creating while the full version gives you a choice of either Survival (finding supplies) or Creative (you already have the supplies). The opticraft smp (full version server) is a survival server so if you want to build you have to buy or find supplies. So if you are completely serious and want to take minecraft to the next level, get the full version. But if you are fine with classic, just keep it like that. Hope I helped!
