Help me build a PC!:)
« on: May 13, 2012, 06:48:26 am »
Looking to build a ridiculous PC. Starting with an Intel i7 Extreme & AMD Radeon 7970 (7990 when it drops, too.) I'd like to over-clock, xfire, all that noise. Drop me a PM with an Amazon cart link full of a dream set up or NewEgg links pref with great motherboards and other parts for this type of set up. Keep in mind some of this is alien to me as I have been out of the PC building game since '98.

I know I'll get questions regarding what I plan to do. Well, I'm not running the International Space Station. I know I can build a midrange PC that would run extremely well. I know I may not even use the full processing speed of an i7 Extreme, but the point is to make a ridiculous rig with ridiculous parts for a ridiculous good time. Mostly vidja games. I'm sure a lot of you can relate. :)

So are you planning to actually buy this or no?

Yes, I am planning to buy.

I was having issues editing my last post.

Anyway, I'd definitely like to invest in a good machine.  Minus display, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. I'd like to begin with the i7 Extreme, two Radeon 7970s in crossfire, 16gb ram, 1tb hd, 128gb (or so) ssd. I welcome recommendations on a power supply, motherboard, and cooling system. Off the top, I'm assuming this is all that's needed. I am planning to run several displays in order to run several programs running as well as a main one in front of me.

This is my research leading up to the purchase to find the parts, with advice and opinions from you guys, and where to find the best price.

And why is that?

One sentence posts are awesome. Please elaborate.

Because it is complete overkill. There is absolutely no reason to have all of that stuff, especially the i7 extreme, not to mention the 16gb of ram.

Your first sentenced just answered it. Of course it's over kill. That. Is. The. Point. Again, I know I will not* utilize the entire processing speed. Go big or get out. And remember how fast technology changes, invest now and it's good for a bit. To you, there may not be a reason, but to say "there's absolutely no reason" is actually ridiculous. Should everything have it's limitations? Should you always get what is just good enough?

And btw, you think 16gb is overkill--there's one user who has 32gb over ram. I forgot his name, but he gets on mumble often.

For people like me, there is no reason to have something that powerful, mostly because spending $3k on a computer that wont play games any better than a $900 computer for the next 3 years is pretty much a waste. Sure when technology advances you will need it, but by that time, the prices would have dropped a ton.

Three years is a pretty far out estimate. Maybe it wouldn't run solely the video game any better, but it'd sure do a lot better doing several things at once. And when the technology does advance again, there will be something more powerful that would barely bat an eyelash at some of the required processing power to run software at that time. Sometimes you just have to go big or get out. Modesty is a great virtue, but there's nothing wrong with eating a little steak and saving the ground beef for another day. Pick you day.

your better off just buying an E-Machines Windows 7/Alienware Windows 7 or a Windows XP/2000 and replace the graphics card with a 7800 or a bit higher.

You can still do everything you want, but you rarely need 7 things running at the same time anyway unless majority is scripts, music, IE or whatever explorer program you use, and whatever game your looking to play.

And even having all that up at the same time barely does squat to your pc.

Your looking at $600-$700 if not less now a days for what I just suggested.

The Alienware idea is actually a good one. Buying a built PC and upgrading is actually a good idea in general. I'll be looking into that, also.

Stay away from AlienWare.

Youtube that piece of crap and most of the owners say it has an 85% crash rate.
