You obtain one either by buying one or signing up on the forums (since you've signed up you have one now! nice!)
you should have received a "coal ore"
this is your protection stone. place it anywhere in your house you want to protect, it will set up a visualization of how far the protection stretched, then the visualization will be removed, and you're done.

It definitely helped me when I was trying to figure it out.

The selling of Protection Stones was taken down because of a harmful exploit and will not be put back up until further notice.
