Offtopic / Re: Anyone here excited for Smash Bros 4?
« on: September 16, 2014, 03:16:10 pm »
Yup, and managed to obtain a demo code for the 3DS version from Reddit.
I got the same but the game is pretty much unplayable on the regular 3ds, screen is too small
I don't find it too bad, but an XL wouldn't hurt. Might get one when the "New" models come out.

General Discussion / Re: Mojang might be purchased by microsoft

but they'd still make a killing from all the new people  buying it as it becomes ever more popular.

Minecraft is nearing the end of its lifetime from what I see. I don't know if I'm missing something but it feels like it.
Idk why you keep saying this.. it is not true.  Just because our server (unfortunatley) has lost players, minecraft is not less popular.

I was not talking about Opticraft, just to be clear. Minecraft as a whole.
Ik, I was just saying that minecraft as a whole is not losing popularity.  The only thing becoming less popular is small, community based servers like our own.  The overall game has taken the youth market by storm. Mainly xbox console editions.
Back when I first heard Minecraft is losing popularity was shortly before it was confirmed as the best selling PC game ever.

Yeah, and the PS2 is the best selling games console ever. How many people do you know who still play on that?

Except that'd be like if that was said right before it became the best selling console.

I don't find it weird that Microsoft wants to buy Mojang, regardless if they're really worth the $2 billion. They've been acquiring companies for awhile including video game developers (like Bungie and Rare). And, tbh, I really don't care if Microsoft can get that money back with Minecraft as I'm sure they'll get $2 billion back at some point with the rest of their products.

What I find strange is that Notch has said before that he's turned down money like this before back in March on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/notch/status/448900844541726720

But now it seems he's not too shy, especially if it's true that he approached them.

I'm also concerned for what this means for Minecraft though. It wouldn't be the first time they've bought an already successful company and ruined them (Rare, creators of Banjoo Tooie and GoldenEye 007, making Kinect games...)

Rejected / Re: Crafter Application - TheWholeLoaf
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:32:07 pm »
Rejected. The tree is really good. However, the rest of the build is rather simplistic with small buildings that are empty.

Also, with Builder apps, it's usually good to have multiple builds in an application. With Crafter, this is pretty much required. You'll need to do many builds that truly prove your skill. Builds that are massive and utilize a wide variety of intricate shapes with very close attention to detail. Whether it be structures or organic builds. The tree is a good step, but there's still a long road ahead for Crafter.

Rejected. I like these builds, but you're going to need more builds with good detail.

Rejected. These builds are definately a good start, but they are rather small compared to what's needed for Builder. Try going for builds that are big and have a lot of detail.

General Discussion / Operator Standards For Ranking (Recruit & Builder)
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:02:58 pm »
When reviewing a build for Recruit or reviewing a Builder application, it is important to understand what to look for when deciding whether or not it meets a good criteria to be accepted:

Recruit:
For Recruit, a build should be a decent size (e.g. 50 x 50 blocks), have good details, and good shapes (e.g. curves) as opposed to box builds.
Here is just one example of a Recruit worthy build:

(click to show/hide)

Decently sized, good detail, and utilizes curves for the arches and exterior.

Note: There is no set standard for the bare minimum a build needs to be considered Recruit worthy, as that is subjective, but you are still required to use good judgement to decide if it is worthy.

Builder:
Builder is much more difficult than Recruit. These are builds that really need to stick out architecturally and/or organically. Larger builds, with excellent detail, and utilizing a variety of shapes. Another thing to consider is how many builds are in the Builder application; fewer the builds, the better the builds need to be. A decent amount is around 3 to 5 builds showing the person's skill, but there is no required number of builds.

For examples of Builder quality builds, here is a link to the accepted Builder applications:
http://www.opticraft.net/index.php/board,71.0.html

Note: As with Recruit, while there is no set standard for the bare minimum a build/application needs to be considered Builder worthy, please use good judgement to decide if it is worthy.

Additional Notes:
  • Sprites and pixel art are not to be considered Recruit worthy nor Builder worthy. There are programs that convert pictures to Minecraft block colors which show how to build them.
  • If more than one person built a build (such as if two people co-built something), the standard, whether Recruit or Builder, is much higher than it would normally be. This is because if two or more people are building something, they should be able to do a lot more than if one person were to build something.

Suggestions / Re: Alternative for creative

Pvp is not a good example. It may have brought a few new players but i hardly used now, despite how much everyone wanted it.

You are right, but for the wrong reason.

Everyone did want pvp, and yes it is abandoned now. However, you have to look at the time gap between when people wanted pvp, and when pvp finally came out.
The first suggestion for pvp, that I could find based off the suggestion threads, was Septemer, 2011. However, it wasn't until between May and July of 2012 that pvp became a pretty popular suggestion (topics were even being locked due to how many people were requesting it with this link: http://www.opticraft.net/index.php/topic,11764.0.html).

Now look when pvp was released: July, 2013. That's a whole year or so later. We had more people on before than we did when pvp was released (and even less now). Not only that, but there was even talk that Optical and cschurz (our developer for the new members) were in the works of a pvp arena at that time. But that plan didn't come to fruition and the idea was abandoned. As time went on, I personally think anyway, a lot of people became disillusioned with the server and left. It wasn't until July 2013 when pvp became a big topic again, and it was released to appease the few who stayed and wanted it.

We can't say that tho. When pvp was being discussed, everyone wanted pvp maps, nothing fancy like hungergames.

I think people were wanting anything at that point.

Simply put: we took too long. People lost interest and probably got tired of waiting and hoping. And I'm not blaming anybody for this. Opti and cschurz were the only developers, but real life became a factor and that always comes first. Nick couldn't do much without them either. But now we can learn from our mistakes and move on as the admins now have console access. We can make good changes and add fun modes to the server that will attract people; especially if donations are running low to where Optical is now paying out of his pocket to run the server (from what I've heard).

Here's a bar graph displaying how many new members signed up each month since Opticraft started based on the stats:

The dots represent different events that I think may have contributed gain/loss of players throughout the years. Explanation of the colored dots:
Black 1: Opticraft Classic is launched. 11/2010
Red: Opticraft SMP is launched. 1/2012
Orange: Member world for SMP is released. 6/2012
Cyan 1: Melons/Pumpkins/Cacti removed from the market. 6/2012
Black 2: Mojang first removes Classic from the main page of Minecraft.net. Re-adds it, but harder to navigate to. 8/2012
Blue: Official YouTube channel launched. 9/2012
*One I should've mentioned was the New Guest World being released on 12/2012, which explains the spike.
Pink: PVP maps released. 7/2013
Black 3: Mojang kills Classic. Permanently removes Classic from the main page at Minecraft.net. 7/2013
Cyan 2: Gold/Iron ingots removed from the market. 9/2013
*The dots also do not account for Minecraft updates that may have boosted popularity.

To me, with the exception of the spike of players when the new guest world was made, it appears the decline started May 2012, but got worse when Classic was dying due to Mojang. The decline may or may not have been helped from melons being removed from the market, I'm not sure.

But one thing I do notice is that the first time since that decline started that the number of new members went up significantly (again besides the spike from the new guest world release) was when PVP maps were added. People joined, at least for a little bit, when we stepped out of the SMP box and tried something new. I know it has been said that things like this suggestion, and many others, may not be "what the server is about". But perhaps, if we want the server to flourish once again, we need to reconsider "what the server should be about", because I don't think us being reluctant to try new things (rather than strongly SMP focused) is doing us any justice.
