Tobs and I have been working on a small private creative server for the past few months. Thanks to the help of deekay we officially began testing it by opening it to staff members and are almost ready to release it to you guys. The plan is to open up the server on sunday around 4pm eastern time.
The server is set up to be as close to the classic server as possible, it is a freebuild server with different worlds for each rank. Ranks will not carry over from classic or smp so everything starts off fresh.
I know sunday is still a few days away but I would rather let people know in advance than to spring it on you guys unexpectedly. We will edit the IP into this post once it is released.

I believe you will need a certain rank to use lava and water, guests will not be able to use it.

No, bans from Creative will not transfer to SMP either.

What are the basic criteria to level up. I am assuming it will be more difficult to tie in with the larger amount of blocks available? Also since lava and water are the same, will crafter and op get world edit, and builder destroytower and teleport?

I don't think destroytower is on the server, but teleport should be.

Considering it's creative and there's a lot more that can be build with the blocks, I'd expect some less bland stuff. Recruit again will be pretty easy, whereas Builder a fair bit harder, and finally Crafter extremely hard. Crafter+ do have world edit, there is no destroy tower (I don't expect any towers anyway as everyone can fly to begin with) and yes, teleport is in for Builder+ :P

outa curiosity what's the stance on mods for this creative server? are we allowed to use something similar to WoM for better flying/faster travel/noclip etc

Tiggy: Flying is part of creative, so that's normal. I think that /thru will be a command available with donation and /speed will be a command obtained with higher ranks :)

bog loss in members, due to forced downtime refreshes. and classic itself collapsing and mojang not supporting it anymore.

Classic isn't closed, it's still up. Just not really accessible because of Mojang.
