Title: Suggest-a-Book
Post by: Wone on December 21, 2013, 05:21:30 am
So when I cannot play Minecraft and got disinterested in doing anything else, I like to read.

I would like you guys to suggest books, novels and whatnot that might be interesting that you had come across before. I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

But please, not books that has a lot of sequel like Harry Potter or LoTR.

Thanks for reading this post.

If you liked the hunger games books try the Legend series by Marie Lu.

1. Legend
2. Prodigy
3. Challenger

Fabelhaven was pretty good too. Lots of mythical creatures and mysteries.
If you want to try a longer series, check out the Pendragon books. Its about a kid who goes between dimensions saving the world. I was hooked.

I enjoyed Dreamsongs: Volume 1 and 2. They are the early works of George R.R. Martin, plenty of great odd stories in those. It's a collection of short stories so it's great to read one every now and then or sit down and enjoy a bunch

The Book Thief, Marcus Zusak
Trash Can Days (for a more middle-school oriented crowd), Teddy Steinkellner

Pfft, 12 year olds? Please. Books do not have an age restrictions on them. If I want to read six page book, then god damn it I will! (Also, that is a fantastic series, good catch.)

Try the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riodan.
Or perhaps "The Paladin Prophecy".

God, so many books, gaaaaaaaaah <3

Thank you for the pleasantly overwhelming suggestions. It will take time to read through each and every one of them.

I'm starting with Divergent. It is a great read, got me hooked in moments.

Seeing as most of the basic books everyone knows about has been covered, here are some of the greatest classics for me:

The Foundation Series-Isaac Asimov
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series- Douglas Adams
Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card
The Giver -Lois Lowry
Around the World in Eighty Days- Jules Verne
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea- Jules Verne
The Time Machine - H.G. Wells

And here's a few from the modern times, more geared towards our youth because of all the teen angst, superpowers, aliens, etc. Nevertheless, interesting reads:

I Am Number Four series- Pittacus Lore
World War Z-Max Brooks
City of Ember- Jeanne DuPrau (I guess I'll recommend the rest of the series too, but I have not yet read the rest)
Little Brother - Cory Doctorow

And finally if you're into kid's book series:
A Series of Unfortunate Events- Lemony Snicket
Holes- Louis Sachar

I definitely support the rest of the series mentioned in the thread already including Divergent and Percy Jackson. Do not be alarmed, the Percy Jackson series is way better than the horrible excuse of a movie adaptation. I'm a strange reader btw. I often hop from one series to another and don't always finish the series until i return it a year or two later sometimes. So I apologize if I did or didn't recommend an entire book series, I just haven't gotten to it yet. As you can see, I'm interested in science fictions and fantasies. :P

I read The Time Machine and I Am Number Four.

I need to take a break. Book hangover, you know.

Dude, now I know why this topic seems familiar to me! We were talking about books for me to read...
Which reminds me, don't we already have a topic like this? By Claw?
Scratch that, it was by Complicated_Name.
Here is the link if anyone wants to check out some books people mentioned. (Check it out, not reply since it's a pretty old topic.) http://www.opticraft.net/index.php/topic,6260.0.html

I like the sequel, but then the next two were boring.

Any Peirs Anthony Book.
First Thing The Series Are Long. BUT They Dont Continue The Same Thing For The Entire Series.
Kinda like and episode of Doctor Who (Not one with parts) They Have A Story And Then Its Over After The Episode.
My Recommendation is Incarnations Of Immortality.
Book 1 On A Pale Horse. Which Is About Death. Thanatos
Book 2 Bearing An Hourglass. Which Is About Time. Chronos
Book 3 With A Tangled Skein. Which Is About Fate. Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho
Book 4 Wielding A Red Sword. Which Is About War. Mars
Book 5 Being A Green Mother. Which is About Nature. Gaea
Book 6. For The Love Of Evil. Which Is About Evil. Satan
Book 7. And Eternity. Which is About Good. God
Book 8. Under A Velvet Cloak. Which Is About Night. Nox
DONT READ UNLESS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE THE BOOK RUINED.

Some books that I really like:

Wintercraft Series by Jenna Burtenshaw
 - Wintercraft
 - Wintercraft: Blackwatch
 - Wintercraft: Legacy

This may sound like a cheesey fail from some author, but to my taste of dark magic - it's the best book I've ever read.

Percy Jackson was also a good read to.

Obviously lol.

DJ is a well educated fellow. Born to parents of Russian origin, who read Tolstoy, Dumas, Frankenstein and other works in the 6th grade. Either for fun or for class.

Plus, how can you NOT read the Three Musketeers, man?! Though I have yet to read War and Peace because the size of the book intimidates me. I can knock out 400 page books in a day or two but that thing just scares me.

Again, strongly recommend The Book Thief. Set in WWII and narrated by Death, 550 pages and no sequel. Great read with a writing style I have yet to see again.
