It really depends. On some servers,  stealing from chests is, while on others, no problem. So which one are you talking about?  Taking from chests, taking dropped items from dead players, which kind?

Oh. Touchy subject. Post this in support. I don't actually know, I only take if the owner allows me.

from a chest
Nope, not griefing I think.
I mean, who would leave chests unlocked? Unless its for donations, try using magnet chests instead.
Leaving chests unprotected is your fault, it's like sharing the items inside with everyone.

That is why we have chest and furnace protection. That nobody can steal your stuff except yourself and the people you have allowed. If it is Public it is different. Then you can take everything.

Actually, you have to think why you did this.
Stealing is a way of griefing. When for example you destroy glowstones, you take them. So, its stealing through griefing.
On the other hand, its the person's fault to leave it open to others.
I think a moderator should post for that.

Technically, this is not griefing, but we would want all players to look at taking items from unlocked chests in the eyes of the person you are taking them from. If you accidentally left a chest unlocked, would you want someone taking from it? Please have some courtesy. Also, posting that you are stealing will work against you if you are planning on being trusted or even staff.

This isn't considered griefing, if you allowed the player to take items from your chest than that's your fault.
If it was a mod+ that took items the chest when it was closed, then it would be a different story...

Yes, this would be totally against the rules.

i just took some coal because it was just there lying around for me. But i am planning not to do it as it may be bad for the person who were stolen.

Did you have to put in a password that they posted next to it?

- If the Chest/Furnace was unlocked, then it's fair game.
- If the Chest/Furnace was locked, then you're gonna get banned.

Plain and simple.

And about mods:  If the thing is over a month old, meaning the player has not been online in over a month, I've been informed that we're allowed to REMOVE the chest/furnace/door.  (And no, that doesn't mean keeping everything that's in it)
