Title: Change to the mods rule
Post by: clawstrider on February 03, 2012, 01:19:53 am
Personally, I think the mod allowed list is a little strict...
There are so many great mods for Minecraft which improve how you play the game, and you cannot use them.
Here are some in which I think it is a bit unreasonable to say no...

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/542215-110-water-shader-alpha-v4d/ (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/542215-110-water-shader-alpha-v4d/) (Its basically a texture pack...)
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-11-optifine-hd-a4-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af/ (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-11-optifine-hd-a4-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af/) (The rest of the mods (Not Optifine)).
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/940974-110sonic-ethers-unbelievable-shaders-glsl-shaders-dynamic-shadows-more/ (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/940974-110sonic-ethers-unbelievable-shaders-glsl-shaders-dynamic-shadows-more/) (One that Mr suggested that I think looks amazing).

If you have anymore, feel free to post below. None of these change the game as such, they either act as a texture pack or helping your Minecraft run better.

The mods rule is meant to be strict.

The mods rule is meant to be strict.

Exactly. Which is why I made this topic.

Isnt it that mods are allowed if they dont give an advantage to the player?

They changed it so that it's no mods allowed besides optifine.

They sincerely look like usable mods, but we can't completely guarantee or be certain that they are in fact safe and fair to use unless we try them out ourselves (which is a particularly lengthy process and would take up a good chunk of our time testing out mods when we should be doing our duties).

Also, many of these modifications are client-side, so we have no idea what the person on the other end is doing to the mod if they make any changes to the code or add other mods that they don't wanna talk about.

By that logic, I could just add a cheat mod to my .jar, and you guys wouldn't know any better. You have no idea what mods I have on. Its all a matter of trust. Today, I could go install all these mods, and you couldn't tell, but I would prefer it to be legal.

How is it a lengthy process? If your playing Minecraft then isn't that aready free time your using? Surely if you have time to play Minecraft you could atleast use 10 minutes of your time to test a few mods.
I honestly see no harm in using mods such as HD texture packs and water shades, because there's nothing you can really add to the code to make them illegal.

EDIT: But the rules are final so I won't argue with them. No mods except for Optifine.

HD texture packs

I didn't even realise that that counted as a mod.
The rules are dumb, and I will argue with them, because its a game-ruining idea which has no real benifit.
Now a rule to prevent hacking, flying, superpick, xraying... that would be useful.
