Just force update
-
- Click start and type %appdata%
- Open the file called .minecraft
- If you want to keep your world saves, back them up.
- Do the same for screenshots.
- Once you've backed them up, just delete the whole .minecraft folder.
- Run Minecraft again and it should download a fresh .minecraft folder.
Hope this helps :)

Much more informative than my post lol..... My post is bad and i feel bad

I had the same problem trying to get 1.2.5.
First you need to force update. This gets clean files to your .minecraft\bin. If your Minecraft crashes, you will need to use Magic Launcher (http://www.minecraftmine.org/magic-launcher-minecraft/). It should allow Minecraft to run normally. To install Optifine, just drag the ".class" files from it into your minecraft.jar (you need something like WinRAR/7-Zip) and delete the META-INF folder.
If you continue having problems, just wait until 1.3 comes out on August 1.

I've been having trouble with WinRAR. Where can i get it?

You can download the free version or buy it here (http://www.win-rar.com/start.html?&L=0). I think its a 30 trial but it still works after that.
