Its pretty easy

1.Download mod
2.Download any stuff that the modder says to make the mod work(eg.modloader)
3.Type Run in start menu and open it
4.type %appdata%
5.open .minecraft
6.go to bin
7.right click the minecraft file and open it with winrar or 7zip
8.drag the mod files you downloaded in the minecraft.jar file
9.Run Minecraft and test if it works

Those are pretty the steps with common mods.So be sure the read the instructions written in the mod's topic
