Title: Medieval Town
Post by: FIREBALL4801 on December 22, 2013, 10:58:16 pm
super497, Kurdman899 and I are making a medieval town at /home fireball4801 castle.  It's no where near finished yet, but so far we have a small section bordered off with walls and filled with medieval germanic housing.  We currently have a four houses each varying in size and shape, an inn, blacksmith's home/workspace, and a military watch tower/barrack.  We plan to expand the walls quite a bit, making the area much larger, and the shape of it more complex than just a simple square.  Eventually there are going to be many more buildings added such as a palace, a farm house with fields, a watermill, a barn with stables, church, courtyard, well, and many more houses.  When you go to the home, you will teleport into a little viewing stand, which will be there until the project is complete and we apply for city protection. Donations are very appreciated as this will be a huge project for the three of us to collect for.  Look out the viewing station and don't be afraid to give your honest opinion, we want to make this as amazing as we can.

Update:

We cleared a lot more space for the walled in area, now making it a perfect square, shoutout to mopar and isabella for helping with such.  I started to build the walls and to new pillars for the new cleared out section, and those are coming along well however not completed.  With this new space (doubling almost tripling our original space) We are now going to start some of the more major builds, including the watermill, church, barn/stables, and palace.  If you have any ideas or suggestions about what we should make, pm on of us ingame or send me a message on here.  Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far!

Well not finished yet, but should probably start coming up with ideas for a name.  Any suggestions?  Needs to sound old and medieval.

Not sure. Maybe try making like a medieval and creepy palace. Add things that would've been found in like a castle from England in the 1400s.

==UPDATE==

The inn, being created by super497, is nearly complete.  Withing a few days depending on school work, it should be complete and i'll upload a screenshot of it

In the mean time, Kurdman899 created a barrack for our kingdom, consisting of the sleeping quarters, "kitchen" area, and practice space, all while making it look like a mini castle

Build on the main palace has started.  We are continuing to tweak it all the time, so progression on that will be extremely slow given how large it is planned to be.  In honor of Ari's birthday last month, I'm dedicating the palace as Wendy Palast, meaning Wendy's palace

Thanks to all of you who have donated to us, around 20 of you have helped, and a major shoutout to xxsssx, StiIIAIive, and cbran0513 for really large donations

If you can make some nice looking structures like statues or domes or something really fancy like that, this could go for project protection. Looks nice! Towns and cities like these make Opticraft look good.

Kingdom of Cydonia, perhaps?

or you could just use an online generator, such as http://www.namegenerator.biz/kingdom-name-generator.php

Thanks guys, this is all really helping, and damn I sure hope it doesn't turn out like osgiliath...
I was thinking of making the name Germanic, since Em and I are German, and it would fit the time frame.
I'll set up a poll of names soon, so keep the ideas coming:P

Ravenholm is probably worse than Osgiliath. Osgiliath was simply abandoned because of proximity to Minas Morgul. Ravenholm became infected with alien zombies

They're just not original. I mean something like Ravengiliath would be original even though it's just a combination of two names. Generally however you should look for a name in the main culture's language. So look at names for Scandinavian or German cities. (eg. Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Hamburg...) then name it from a combination of the best city names in your opinion.

--==Major Update==--

We've moved.  It's been more than two months since this page was updated, and a lot has happened.  We decided that the previous attempt was just plain awful.  We had no planning involved, and made it right next to the world border which looked awful.  So, we moved the location to the new member world:
New Reich Tal Ingis Location (http://smp.opticraft.net/map/#/-2103/64/20/-2/3/0)
The walls/location aren't quite finished yet.  We have a little to go on one of the walls, as well as adding an entrance and changing the exterior appearance to this
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)
super497, Kurdman899, and I have been hard at work designing new buildings to add to the space (as well as keeping some of the old)
Here are some of the builds we've decided to put in:
Town Hall (me):
(click to show/hide)

Inn with market (me):

Random peasant houses (Kurdman899):
(click to show/hide)

Peasant fishing hut (Kurdmann899):
(click to show/hide)
super497 is hard at work designing a castle to put into the walls.  We have planned that inside the walls will consist of the castle and a few other key buildings, as well as homes for Elite (homes for purchase).  Then there will be a trail leading from the entrance to a peasant village a little ways off.  This will include a mill, granary, primitive blacksmith's, barn, watch towers, bell tower, and a bunch of peasant homes as above (may or may not be for sale); we are also going to attempt a palisade wall:
(click to show/hide)
around at least part of this peasant village.

--==MAJOR UPDATE==--

The new location is finally blocked off.  After taking a long leave, Emily and I went to work and finished the new walls in a matter of days.  Come to /home Fireball4801 Talingis (for Reich Tal Ingis) to view this new location.  It is still just a completely flat 200x200 space, but you may come look at the new location as well as run along the walls and up and down the pillars.  Once Emily (super497) returns from camp, we're going to get started on the castle, which involves walling off a bit of the inside, from two mid pillars on the walls.  Once this is complete, the actual kingdom buidings will be started, moving old ones from the last location as well as making new ones (see previous post).  Once this building starts, we could really use the support in getting City Protection.  As always, donations to this project are greatly appreciated.
Big help to both Zeradeth_ and TheWholeLoaf for assisting in the completion of these walls

Update:

We've begun clearing a bit more of the land around the walls, removing the giant cliffs and drop offs to make it seem more natural, and a whole lot easier on the eyes.  I'm hoping to finish this by Friday, as most of the surrounding area has no hills/mountains to clear, though the sections that do are expansive and very tall.  Anyone who helps out can either be paid accordingly, or be formally thanked on the forums once it's done, and have their name on a plaque once the kingdom is finished.  Message me ingame if you have interests in helping us out.  Hope to see you there!

Thanks to sterlingsinger and isabella1366 for helping out already!

Update:

We cleared much of the surrounding land, making a natural-like transition between the flat land just around the walls and the instant drops and cliffs right beyond that.  Also, we made a strange looking formation on one of the hills, of which will be explained later in this project.  There is still more to be done- tomorrow.  Anyone willing to help me, message me in game for details on how to assist the build.

Major thanks to sterlingsinger, isabella1633, and HarrytheGuerilla for helping a whole lot in this phase!

Update:

We finished the naturalization of the surrounding landscape, making a gradual transition from the cleared area of the kingdom to the hills of the surrounding landscape.  Thanks so much to all that helped me accomplish this laborious goal three days before I expected to, however most of the thanks goes to sterlingsinger for helping me out every day without arguments or complaining.  Once Emily returns from her camp on Friday, the two of us will begin construction on the castle, and once that is finished, the rest of the town.  The project is back on schedule.

--==Major Update==--

I was going to put pictures along with this update- I have plenty of awesome ones of builds Emily and I have been working on the past few days.  I'll tell you what there is, but I suppose you'll have to wait till they're constructed on here to see exactly what they look like :D We made:
-Barracks: to go inside the kingdom walls, equipped with training yard, research room, and living space
-Duke's Fort: to go somewhere in the peasant village, it is a mini castle for the duke of that village, the equivalent of the castle to the main kingdom
-Mage's Tower: to go somewhere either inside the castle's walls or the kingdom's walls, a very tall and slender build with five circular rooms at the top
-Tavern: a rather large build in an L shape, a fancy bar to go either in the kingdom or peasant village, undecided for the time being

Emily and I completed the pillars, entrance, and the exterior design of the walls for the castle's second defense inside the kingdom's walls.  The blocked off space takes up approximately a quarter of the kingdom, allowing for a very large castle and an even larger community inside.  While she finishes the last few parts of the inner walls and continues planning the castle, I will begin to transfer my planned builds from the plan site to the kingdom, starting with some of the housing in one corner, leading to the marketplace/inn in one of the front corners (middle of community's L shape), barracks near the castle's entrance, and whatever else in the other corner.  The majority of the housing will be in the peasant village, with elite housing and options inside the kingdom.  Thanks for all the support everyone, once a few of the builds are in we could use a bit more in getting City Protection for it :D

We've worked more on the actual castle, as you can see the throne/ball room's floor has been completed, as well as the front entry and start of the kitchen/pillar.  We started the living section, adding houses and inns to the back left corner of the kingdom.  In the front right section, we added barracks, an archery post, and stables.

Update:

We've constructed many more buildings in the residential area, after yet another long "break".  We lowered a section by a bit, making it look more unique and not just a constant flat, and added housing and a greenhouse inside of it.  These will be able to be claimed when the kingdom is eventually complete.  The live map has not updated recently, but in the hope that it soon does:

If it hasn't still, the home has not changed, go to /home fireball4801 talingis
The place is completely public, and every door is accessible.  You may run and explore anywhere within the kingdom's boundaries, our only request is you do not break any blocks.  Thanks for everyone's support!

Update:

Finished residential area of the kingdom, consists of around 30-35 homes that will be available for purchase.  Sizes range from very very small to very large, prices will change accordingly of course.  In the market/military district, we are currently moving the tavern closer to the path, since there was way too much room in between.  The inn/food market will remain how they are, minus a new roof item replacement to fit the rest of the kingdom.  We will re-arrange the military buildings (barracks, archer training, and stables) to a more distinguished location, and fill the gaps with more market-like builds.  The corner of the kingjavascript:void(0);dom adjacent to the residential and market/military districts will consist of a church, as well as a few unknown builds.  We plan in the future to finish the castle (duh right) and create a Royal graveyard and garden.  Thanks for all those who've supported us thus far!

Live map's broken for now, so here's an aerial view thanks to TheWholeLoaf:

Update:

SirAshwood and I worked on and finished a gigantic church last night, with a graveyard on both sides.  It takes up most of the remaining empty space in the walls (excluding the castle's quarter) and really adds a cool look to the project I think.  First person to name the church it's based off wins a special prize, post on this page what you think it to be.  I won't be posting pictures- so you need to go in game and see it!  Some people will probably get it instantly.

We're nearly done with the project's frame.  Emily is finishing up on the castle and now all that remains for me is the building of a couple buildings, while the rest of the work will mainly focus on hidden locations and puzzles for the players.
The selling of houses has come to a close, those who were interested were able to purchase a house of their choice.  However, I have had to tell a couple people already that they were close to violating the rules I set forth when allowing to protection (no one is in trouble).  So, I have decided to make it OPTIONAL that you can relinquish access to the protection, but keep your house and get your money back.  That way grief is minimal again, you get money back, and your position in the project remains.  Write a comment if you have purchased a house and choose to do this.
Thanks for all your support guys, I really appreciate everything you guys have done!

I just posted earlier, but someone asked me a question and I thought I'd clarify some of what's going on.
Currently there are four secret rooms in the entirety of the kingdom, with about 9 or 10 different passages leading to one or the other, or from one to the other.  Those of you who know some of the ways, I ask you do not give it them away to the other players.
One of the rooms, the most well known as of yet, will be the basis of a story line to come.  The newest of rooms is a sneak peek of the next project being started after the kingdom is finished.  There will be many more to come, but for now enjoy looking for the current ones!

I just finished the guild system in the kingdom.  There are now five groups to choose from- the warriors, the mages, the merchants, the lych, and the assassins.  The warrior/mage/merchants are not hidden, just in buildings related to their cause; however the lych and the assassins have their own respective dens hidden in somewhat related areas.  Each of these guilds have their own stories and explanations of enemies/allies.  Go to each of these places- if you can find them- and decide which (if any) of these you want to be a part of.  /mail me ingame which you choose and I'll put you down in the list I have made.  Currently, I'm alone in the assassins, while Roza, Joshyouare, butterflywolves, and kag1999_ are warriors.  Matthius is all alone in the guild no one likes- the merchants.
So, what's the purpose?
Later on, after construction of the kingdom and afterwards a much smaller project, I'm going to start making puzzles/events and challenges around the server, that are specific or include certain guilds.  Some day there may be a pvp match against two guilds, or there will be a task assigned to a specific guild somewhere random that will give them an award if completed.  Not all the details are figured out yet, but I'm hoping it'll be fun to make and mess around with.  Thanks to all of you who have supported this build so far, and dealt with all my procrastination and out of game studies!

Alright, update.  The kingdom itself is done, and the castle nearing completion.  There are two quests new available, one universal and one Assassin specific.
Universal- Find Icarus
Icarus is an exiled citizen who was convinced he would be able to overtake the kingdom and wage war against all who didn't agree with his reasoning.  He was sent to the dungeons, but later discovered to have escaped without returning to the surface.  Find him and tell me the password by him to retrieve a reward.
Assassins- Find the Assassin Seal
There is legend of an Assassin's tomb located somewhere in the kingdom, with a special seal inside inscribed with plans for a new and powerful blade mechanism, remember that bales of hay are key locations to Leap of Faith into.  Locate the tomb, tell me the password and retrieve the reward of a powerful weapon.
