Today i found out you can only see a mob/player from about 80 blocks away. After that, they dissapear. Is it possible in any way for the range to be longer? If so, would it be server-side(plugin), or client-side(mod)? And if it were a mod, would it be legal?

This would have to be a client side mod to modify how far you can see entities.
-
Oh then would this be a legal mod?
-
Of course it's legal, any Minecraft mod is legal.
Quote from Minecraft's Terms of Use:
If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changed versions of our software. Basically, mods (or plugins, or tools) are cool (you can distribute those), hacked versions of the Minecraft client or server are not (you can't distribute those).

He means for the server... No you can NOT have any mods except Optifine.

Oh. I thought it was any mod that gives an unfair advantage is illegal, so i hadn't thought visibility of entities from a further distance was so bad.

My bad, yeah, it's not allowed =p
