Did you delete the mod folder in .minecraft? Or any hd texture packs that you may have used with a patcher?

Well it would make it possible to build a good monster farm.
How do you make an EXP farm with only the one monster spawner in the crazy underground location where the monster spawner is?

You have to find a monster spawner near your home ( somehow) i was extremly lucky to find one a couple of blocks away from mine. Or find a double spawner ( 2 spawners in a small block radius) i got 2
What you should want to do to get that, is to go to unexplored areas and start mining. Eventually you'll find abandoned mineshafts (pregenerated) which contain cave spider spawners (usually more than two).

I say auto butcher every 3-4 hours as atd said. Or maybe try to remebmer when did the problem start and then if a new plugin was implemented by that time.. ( i ll blame the herochat but i think its before that ). But srsly you should do something even temporary for now.

Me on the other hand cant play without sound. I get pissed if o dont hear the walking, the water, the zombie growls ect. And being a FPS player i know that sound can lead you to victory, especially if you have surround headset/speakers

Assuming you meet the above mentioned requirements, I'll go ahead and explain uhm.. the game?
Minecraft is a 3D sandbox (sandbox= you can do whatever you like) wich has 2 different gamemodes (actually much more than the 2 standart ones) wich are:
1.Creative as the name suggests you have all blocks available to "create" anything you like. (ex. Houses, ships, football stadiums ect.)
2. Survivall its a mode in wich you are called to survive in a randomly generated environment ( find food build a shelter, survive the night when dangerous creatures seek to harm you). In order to survive you have to build a shelter. In order to build a shelter, you have to get blocks. In order to get blocks faster you have to use tools ( axe, shovel, pickaxe..). In order to get those you need materials (wood,stone,iron..).
Consider typing on youtube: How to survive your first night. There are many tutorials on how to play the game.
And when you are exoerienced enough with the game on single player then you'd wanna go online. To join the opticrafts survival server you have to enter its ip wich is: smp.opticraft.net
Before starting, though, Its important that you read the Information page
