I don't think that this suggestion has already been suggested. So the title says it, I think it would be nice if we could have a forum chat. Not only the private message thingy... I saw this on another forum (other from MC) and it is pretty cool and usefull. thanks for your time :)

That sounds fun actually.
-
Ive seen it too.

It would allows to talk with our friends or to get help when we aren't on IRC or online
-
I am liking this idea, i think it would be:
fun
and useful.

Then this would defeat the purpose of IRC.
-
I don't quite get what this would be. Is it just IRC, but for the forums?
-
Kinda. Its just a chat. But does our forum support?
-
This (http://www.simplemachines.org/) is Opticraft's forum engine. You can check there.
Edit: Are you talking about something like this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=60)?

Exactly, IRC for Opti, and forum chat would have it's own little window that is displayed on the forums only.
-
I really don't think this is necessary. We already have Mumble and IRC as means of communication.
-
I feel if this were implemented it would cause there to be a need for a forum redesign to let it be used to its full potential
-
Great Idea!

Finally.
I think this would be a shout out box style. It'd be better for the noobs. And if you think it would knock out irc, there are two points:
1 IRC is for in-game chat.
2 It'd be a lot easier to chat, as it wouldn't be spammed with in-game chat. Hopefully optical would be active there.
It'd just be a way to discuss things without having to make a topic. It'd be really fun :D

Mr. Optical, we are awaiting your approval.

incorrect. the simple machines forum (this forums engine) supports thier own chat-thing. I was able to implant it on my site, which uses the simple machines forum engine also.

No, I understand that it is possible on this engine. I just think the current setup of the forum (visually) would have to change for it to smoothly fit into the already existing landscape
-
this is one of the best server suggestions i have heard. it may take some time, but i think that it will be worth it. ;D
-
I disagree. What's the point if we have IRC?

all i had to do was add a tab on that top row thing where the forum, home, vote, etc links are

irc allows you to talk to people taht are ingame; this is only for people on the forum chat at the time
-
IRC can accomplish that as well. People tend to use it for in-game chat, but it's not exclusively in-game chat only.
The question remains: does having another IRC inlet make sense?

Just saying, some people play on classic, some on smp, but we all
go on the forums, that's where a new irc could come in handy. It
would cover the ground which in-game irc couldn't handle by linking
up the two servers, and where would be the better place to host
this new IRC? On the forum, neutral ground, where everyone can
chat and not be spammed by the shouts of "carrots for sale!".
So yes it does make sense, it may take a bit of effort at first, but
from there it's all down-hill.
-
I'd like to pick this topic back up.
I truly believe if this is implemented it would be used to its full extent.
Yes please :P

I like the idea of a forum only chat. I know we already have many ways to communicate but this might be nice too.
-
Bump.. just wanted to revive, get an answer or nick's approval :P
-
or optical's thoughts lol

or optical's thoughts lol
that would work too :P
-
i can totally see usefulness in this. We need a chat for everything xD Ingame, those who cant be ingame, and those who want to talk. Adding forum chat would render our server complete on the communication scale.

This would be much better than IRC. IRC requires you to download a software, connect to the server and THEN you can actually communicate with other players. Having an actual forum chat box would save you all the pain of getting an IRC client or even Mumble.

We would still have to log in to our accounts. But still, much easier.

We have a tool here that lets you stay logged in your account on the forums forever ;)

You actually don't need to download any software.
I don't think 'easier' is the answer to everything. If that were the case, we'd have a whole lot more suggestions being implemented. And there's really no pain in downloading the software, it only takes a few minutes of your time, and probably less for IRC.

I'm not totally sure if this is what your saying, but by easier, I meant easier to log in to our forum account than going on mumble, going to irc, or even getting in game. For all those people with their own computer, or at least comp account, I'm going to guess about 1/2 have their homepage set to opticraft.net. so I'm basicly a couple clicks and a few letters away from complete forum access. Irc takes much longer, and mumble is just a freaking pain.

My thoughts exactly friends (don't know why it took so long for
people to answer after I replied, oh well, at last they did)
