Title: Xoiiku's links of mystery and awesomeness
Post by: Xoiiku on March 27, 2011, 06:56:11 pm
I thought that subject line might be more interesting and extensible than, "check out this cool math program I found".

Anyways, I found this website http://www.khanacademy.org/ after watching the founders TED talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/salman_khan_let_s_use_video_to_reinvent_education.html). So far, I've been doing practice exercises to help me get better at math. For a self directed learner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodidacticism) like me this is a great resource. So, I thought maybe other people might find this useful as well.

Architecture related TED (http://www.ted.com) talks:

I was curious if anyone has been, or is still, using Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/) to learn math or the other subjects that are covered there. I've been studying for my SAT and college placement tests and I keep thinking about how much better prepared I'd be if I'd known about it years ago. To that end I thought I'd re-post the link for anyone who missed it the first time, and might benefit from it.

Thanks for posting this Xoiiku. Although I already knew about Khan Academy, it's an amazing site and it deserves to be spread around and used more than it currently is.  It helped me a lot with a few different math classes already.  I just wish there were more videos on it (mainly on programming, as it's my favorite topic :P)

My math teacher made us use paper... I could do half the problems in my head, but she wanted our work worked out on the paper so she didn't think we were cheating because she put the answers on the school website... She was a horrible teacher.

That's kind of well, not right, since we use calculators to solve problems.

My teacher only cares on how you do it, the answer is less of the concern ;)

Since there are a lot of people building cathedrals and such I thought these NOVA (http://video.pbs.org/program/979359664/) programs on Building the Great Cathedrals (http://video.pbs.org/video/1619317222) and Secrets of the Parthenon (http://video.pbs.org/video/980040228) might be interesting to some people. There is also this decent Physics of Stone Arches (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/physics/arch-physics.html) interactive associated with the show on cathedrals.
