Title: Building Competitions
Post by: TheWholeLoaf on September 19, 2012, 01:35:38 am
Im thinking about starting a building competition to bring out the best builders in the server :D. Anyone can join and there will be prizes of some kind. As of where this will be held, I have a few plots in a closed off part of my town where it will be.

How it will work:
There will be a couple ppl at a time that enter and they will have a predetermined amount of time to make something amazing and meet the requirments.(See requirements bellow) I will judge the builds and possible along side a few others of my choosing. All builds that are made will have to be taken down by you after the comp. is over. The winner gets to decide if he/she would like to keep their build on the plot.

Requirements:
Each Comp. will have a specific type of build, such as different styles( victorian, modern, greek, ranch, italian, etc.) The topic could also be different types of buildings like skysrapers, houses, offices, resturants, theaters, and so on. And also different design styles like landscaping, interior designing, the shell of a build.

Prizes:
Prizes will most likly be money and or diamonds. I might charge a fee to enter so that I dont run out of money :P.

I'm doing this because i think it'd be fun to see what you guys can come up with and create and see everyone elses builds.
As of when this will begin, I'm not sure yet so stay tuned.

Leave comments below if you think this is a good idea or not.

                                 Thanks,
                                 Loaf

I'm also starting to write a book in-game about building. I'll probably have it in a chest near the plots if you'd like to read it. Just don't take it or I'll consider it greif since there will be a sign above it saying put this back or it's grief.

Let me know if you think that's a good idea as well :P

Thanks Nhataley. I'll be posting a schedule of what each comp. I'll be when it gets closer to the time this starts.

It might be best if you exclude any crafter from participating  :D
Last time there was a building competition, me and ZXFEAR participated and I was first and zx was second.
soo yeah...

I'll take into consideration the players talents. For inctance, if 2 players compete and one has been one the server for a while and has made some decent builds and the other is a crafter, I would judge it to see if both players creativity and what they designed matched their current skills.

I'll also look at passed builds to gadge their talent. Creativities the key in this process.

This sounds like fun.  Don't blacklist Crafters.  I'm not a crafter, but what's the point of a competition when you bar good builders from entering?

What's the reward?

well the thing is, crafters are most likely to win to competition (i speak out of experience) and it might not be funt for the OTHER players if they participated...
of course i'm not forcing anything on anyone

I have no desire to be a crafter.  On the other hand, I have no desire to enter the competition unless Crafters are allowed.  Raise the bar, don't lower it.   ;D

Perhaps an entry fee, winner takes the pot.

As i said terrewee, ill take that into consideration when you compete. Everyone is allowed to participate. And there will probably be a fee to enter.

And that is a good point Interbane. Having crafters and skilled builders in the comp. will also challenge other competitors.

You shouldn't limit it to just buildings, personally i prefer 3d sculptures and just buildings would ruin it for me.

also what kinda size limit are we talking typically the better u build the bigger the builds get so as to include more details and make it look pretty.

Hmm that's a good idea. I'll put a few of those in there too. I also was thinking about putting in redstone inventions.

That is actually a true statement, unless you count B1ueJ0ker for his amazing castle.

If you're going to do red stone b aware that people will just look up YouTube video tutorials rather than create it themselves as designing efficient circuitry can b quite tedious given the large amount of trial and error since most people don't fully understand logic gates and binary operations.

I've looked at most redstone tutorials and since I'll most likely give a certain thing they should make and make it include certain gates and operations with pistons, that will make it harder to find an exact tutorial. Plus the time limit on them will be a lot shorter than the time they would have for buildings.

That gives a benefit to those who have memorized many of the various designs for circuits.  There's nothing wrong with that.   :D

Yes but if everyone looks up tutorials it's not fun

Well, the person who has the various components memorized would build faster than a person who has to reference tutorials.  Scoring a competition involving mechanisms would need to include a similar Rubric to what FLL uses to score robot competitions.

Function - how well it performs the designated task.

Style - aesthetic judgement

Economy - How streamlined is the wiring?  A small, compact, efficient design scores higher than a confabulated sprawling mass of redstone.

The creativity of the host is what would make or break a mechanism competition.  A combination task would work.  Like, build a mechanism that harvests a pumpkin, a cocoa bean, and a cactus, and delivers them to a 1 block area.

Or a themed competition.  "Build the best hidden piston door"

Keep the task secret until the day of the competition, and allow only 2-3 hours to build it.

I have been trying to get an official building event going but there is just no possible way to do it right now without having the problem of guests stealing the items.

Thanks Interbane thats very helpful. I was gonna do something close to that but that sums up everything :D.

also that'd be awesome Nick. But why are guests a problem. They shouldnt be allowed to join since its very simple to become a member. And wouldnt the area be protected?

I've decided to hold the first competition on Sunday September 30th. You will have from 5:00 pm on the 30th to 5:00 pm on Friday October 5. If you would like to enter MSG me your name on the forum with a subject of Building Comp.. Only the first 15 people will be able to compete. If you are not chosen to compete, then participate in the next event, most of the people from the first comp. will not be accepted so that everyone gets a chance to build. You must be a member rank or higher to enter.

There is also a $750 entree fee. Do not pay me while I am offline. When I get on I'll will ask the people who entered to pay me.

-----------THE COMPETITION-----------
Design a lovely Modern House that looks realistic with interior and landscaping designs. Your house should make me feel like I would accually want to live in it in real life.

Keep in mind that even though you have plenty of time to come up with an idea, you will have a limited space in your plot and all plots are different sizes. Do not ask me to see the plots before the 30th.

I will post the top 3 with their reward.

Stay tuned for a list of the 15 people that enter.

This post is subject to change at anytime before the 30th so watch for that was well. If there is a change it won't be anything drastic, most likely just adding info.

Trust me, I have though about this A LOT and there is just no way to give anyone ( i dont trust members or even trusted users to return blocks) the materials they need without them having the ability to leave with said materials.

Why would'nt they use their own materials in a plot with a ps provided by me work. When the comps over they take it down themselves and I take the ps back. No one but them and me can touch their project until its over.

Because now you have just given an unfair advantage to players who have more resources when the competition starts.

I have several original Redstone designs. I would be willing to share them if needed, I know of several mob killers as those I enjoy the most :D

Well honistly if they want to enter they need to have their own recorces in the beginning. I suppose I could also have a program to give money out to those who need it.

I wonder if it would be possible to implement something along with the new pvp system where you would b transported to a building world, inventory stripped and have basically a free market to get any block you need by clicking a sign, then after the comp/when you leave your inventory is returned minus the items from the competition the only dilemma I'd see is getting a judge, but it could just pick a random op/mod that's online to judge each comp

That's basically just a creative world and isn't opticraft's classic server creative. I suppose it'd make things simpler if there was a building creative world warp for the amp server but I doubt that will happen.

It would only be added for the competition, then deleted.
