General Discussion / 3x Spawner Giveaway
« on: June 03, 2012, 01:40:40 am »
Watch the video for details about the prize.

Updated Link (Use if top one is flagged for copyright in your country) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a85074PQau0

To win you must simply provide proof that you have benefited someone other than yourself in a semi-impactful way. (Example being donating clothes to your local charity, though if you choose this path it must be more than one or two articles of clothing.)

The first person to provide proof wins; it's as simple as that.

When you win the trap doors will be torn down so you can become the owner and you will be added to all protection stones. (Simply so this "contest" is for the spawners, not for the protection stones; this method ensures that you get access, you just can't remove the stones.)

Suggestions / Updates Info & Hide Chats
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:20:05 pm »
I know this is my third suggestion today (and ever), but I just felt like sharing, and it by no means hurts anything.

I feel another update for the site that might be nice is an update section. (Added to the navigation bar.)

It would just list what updates are planned, which are currently being worked on, and possibly a progress of said updates.
Example: http://www.2006scape.com/services/forums/thread.ws?1,2,6,208

You could even create a spoiler of sorts using a simple JavaScript function so that users could see what updates you have already finished. (Would allow people to see how much work you actually have to do.)

Just thought it might be nice for people to know what's coming to Opticraft
-Dave

Edit:
Reading through the forums yet another idea came to mind, and instead of creating a new thread, I'll just post it here.

Allow players to hide either Global or Trade chat.
   1) Would be nice to not have your screen spammed when you're off mining or something.
   2) Would allow you to specifically view the trade chat if you're in the market to sell/buy.
   3) Would allow you to not have to see any talk of trade if you're not interested.

And a server message could be added that would periodically message you saying: "Don't forget, you're currently not displaying the following chats: Trade, Global." That way users don't accidentally leave, say, trade hidden and miss something.

Suggestions / Nickname Donation
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:00:13 pm »
I was looking through the donation page, and I was rather disappointed to see that there was no option for players to get a nickname. (Displayed instead of your username -- Most servers include a "~" in front of nick names so they're distinguishable.)

I was wondering if there was any plan to add this, or any chance of it getting added?

I plan on donating when I have some money to spare, which will hopefully be when I get paid for one of the websites I'm currently building. (I don't spend any of my website money on bills. Lately I've started saving for a Z28 that my brother has had for a number of years, but I'm sure I could spare some to donate.)
I would love for that to be an option when that time comes though. (I don't enjoy "Myskillzownu" being displayed. I much prefer "Dave".)

And if it does get implemented it might be a good idea to only allow users to change their nick once per donation (stopping people from changing over and over), and to prevent someone from getting a nick that another user has.
(I know that's probably common sense, but still.)

And while I'm posting this, I'd also like to bring the voting pop-up window:
I think it would be nice to stop displaying when users click "Don't show me this anymore."
I personally vote, and getting hounded by that 24/7 is kind of annoying.
It would be an easy fix with a PHP or JavaScript (though some users don't enable it) cookie, and you could just tell the cookie to expire after 24/48 hours. That way users still get reminded, but they aren't completely hounded by it.

Offtopic / Website Prices - Your Thoughts?
« on: May 06, 2012, 05:06:30 pm »
Among other computer-related services I offer, one of them happens to be website creation. (I don't plan on doing it forever; I've just been in need of cash, and it's quick cash.)

Currently, as I have not previously have experience creating websites for others, my rates are very low.
Right now I'm making a website for a local ISP and I'm charging $100 for the design, $300 for the home page & two sub pages, $40 for each additional page, and $40/month to manage the site.
Keep in mind this is just a static HTML/CSS website, excluding some small JavaScript on the front page. (Image transition/slideshow.)

I'm also currently making a second website, though this is for someone close to my friend.
For that reason I'm charging $300 flat, though I'm making it with Drupal. (For the thing he specifically wants, Drupal is the better choice.)

So my question for those who design websites/have a general knowledge about the topic:
What are your rates (if applicable), and do you think I should increase my rates for future websites?
Keep in mind that I do do good work, and there's hardly nothing I can't do.

It's a question I've been pondering for a while now, and I don't know what I should do.
For the most part, the websites I've been making are for small local businesses (I live in a bloody village), and people I know.
That mixed with that fact that I am reasonably young, I don't want to scare people off with prices that seem to high. (I feel as if it's going to be the epitome of my downfall, as I typically charge low rates for all computer work. (For the same reason.))

Optional Side Question:
(This is for those who do design/have designed websites, and it's just a random question I'm always curious about.)
What do you do about IE users (especially IE6 users) who view your site?
For websites I get paid for, I just have to implement "hacks" so to speak to make sure everything functions correctly. (The <!--[if xx IE x]> is the only good thing Microsoft has done in my opinion, but we still shouldn't need it.)
Typically I try to coax them to let me block IE6 users, but occasionally you get a person who wants IE6 support.

For my personal work, I just flat out block IE users from viewing my site.
As many people have told it, it drives away a large user base, but I don't care.
They will be redirected to page asking them to switch browsers, and explaining why they should.
If they're to stubborn/stupid to listen to reason, I could care less if they look at my site.

Thanks a bunch guys

Discussion forum / MMORPG - Your Opinions
« on: May 06, 2012, 04:48:33 pm »
Note:
The real part of this thread starts at Question 1.
You don't have to read the introduction; it's just there for those who are interested.

Introduction:
As I breifly introduced in my introduction thread "http://www.opticraft.net/index.php/topic,9578.0.html", I, along with a few others, are working on creating an MMORPG.

The idea first started by an old friend of mine who was visiting from Australia and I, about 6 years ago.
From there I constantly evolved the idea in my head, and eventually started to write and type stuff down.
From there I just added and revised, and didn't do much.
My plan was to find a company that would make the game for me, as I believed it had incentive.

2/3 years after the game was first thought up, I decided it would be awesome to try to create the game myself, and I began talking to my brother. (He has around 25+ years of experience with computers, and he's a very smart guy.)
Talking to him I realized the possibility was real, and we decided we were going to make the game.

I asked my friend (Tigerwolf117 on here) if he would like to join us, and he said yeah.
So we researched, and began to start.

At first we were all just creating 3D models for the game, and after a while we branched off. (Namely because I hated it, and it wasn't what I wanted to do.)
My brother enjoyed it and was pretty good at it, so he stuck with that role.
Tigerwolf then took on the role of doing GFX in Gimp, drawing basic concepts, obtaining textures, creating basic models to work with, etc. Basically the odd artistic jobs.
I took on the role of the programmer, and I began to look into the possible options. (I eventually settled on the Panda 3D Game Engine, in which I can write with Python.)

Knowing Python was an easy scripting language, I began to grow my knowledge in it. (At the current time I had a lot of down time at work as I was temporarily in charge of helping people with their computer issues, so I camped in my office, and whilst having nothing to do, I practiced Python.)

At times schedules began to conflict, and that made things very difficult. My brother depended on Tiger in a lot of ways, and I 100% depended on my brother. (Without models I had nothing to work with.)
Things came up, such as my brother getting married, my brother having a kid, me being busy with this, Tiger being busy with that, and eventually the idea got put off.

We would occasionally get the fire to start working on it again, but nothing really happened until recently.

Now we have four of us, we're as serious about working on it as we have ever been, and my highly artistic friend Riley joined the team.
Currently:
My brother is in charge of the 3D models (all aspects of them at the current time), and as he is truly a knowledgeable guy, he can help with most of the questions we dish out. (Though I can answer most of Tiger's and Riley's questions, and up to this point I haven't had many questions myself.)
Tiger is between jobs so to speak. He isn't quite sure what he wants to do in life itself, and until he figures that out/we find something we're in need of, he isn't responsible for too much. (That will change as the ball gets rolling.)
Currently I'm thinking of having him also do concept work, gather/create textures, find good references to make sure we correctly animate people/animals, etc.
Riley is in charge of drawing concepts of whatever we may need, and he is in charge of creating reference drawings for my brother to model off of.
My brother, myself, and Tiger all own expensive graphics tablets (Tiger's being the best), and the next time Riley is visiting I plan on getting him used to them, as it would help immensely.
I am still in charge of the programming/game engine side of things. I will also be creating the website when the time comes for it, and I will probably create most of the graphics for it. I might ask for Tiger's help though, depending on how much he has on his plate.

Our current goal is to create a very basic "game" (basically you can customize basic features of your player, choose between two weapons, and kill chickens that are in a pen), and get some nice concept art done to show people.

At that point we are going to work on creating a very professional video about the game, our plans for the game, and who we are. (Having a love for creating videos is finally going to pay off :D)

At that point we are going to post our project on kickstarter.com, including the video, concept art, and some information, in the attempt to raise some money to get the ball rolling big time.
At the current time the plan for the money is to hire some professionals for a few things here and there to make sure the game is as good as it can be, build a good server that we can dedicate to it, and possibly purchase some motion-tracking items for character animation.

Question 1:
Now that that's all out of the way (if you even read it -.^), I would like to know:
If you were to create your own MMORPG, what are some key things you would absolutely want/not want in your game.

Keep in mind that this game is going to have a style/feel similar to that of Runescape/WoW, though it will be completely unique and its own.

We want to do what other games have done wrong, right.
We also want to make this a game that we are sure players will enjoy and want to play, which is why I'm asking you guys. (Who better to ask than gamers, right?)

Question 2:
Questions 2 & 3 aren't as big of a deal as number one, but I would like to hear the ideas of those who are willing to share them.

In many games, the buying and selling of gold is all over, and it can greatly hurt the game and the economy of the game.
What are some things you guys would do to combat this?
Note: We don't want to implement something, such as a trading-cap, that would punish the players that don't purchase gold.
It's almost a question without an answer, but maybe with your help we can come up with a good solution.

Question 3:
This question is about players modifying their game client to cheat.
Example: hacking their client to tell the server "I picked up an iron sword" or "I attacked player x and did 1000 damage."

To prevent this, a lot of that stuff is run on the server (how much damage was dealt, what the drop was, etc.), though not everything can be done server-side.
Checking to make sure clients haven't been modified is a whole new ball game, and at the current time that's a no go.

Do you have any ideas? (Anything that could prevent them from cheating, make it so their cheats are less effective, etc.)

Thanks a bunch guys.
You may not think so, but questions as simple as this can greatly help to improve the game!

Offtopic / reCAPTCHA 2
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:46:25 pm »
For those of you who didn't already know, reCAPTCHA 2 is used to discover words in documents that a computer could not correctly analyze.
Example: A book is scanned, and the computer can't make out the word "Gulliver". That word goes into a reCAPTCHA, and after x amount of users type the same string, the computer knows that the word is whatever that string is.

Because that's the case, the computer doesn't know if you typed the word correctly or not, which is what the other word is for. This is a word that they know already, so they can verify that you are correctly typing the word.
Note: The word they know is easily distinguishable, as it usually contains a block/streak of another color, and the section of the font where the blob is will be white instead of black.

So my question is, for those of you who already knew this, do you type the correct word in, or do you type something else, in hope that it appears in the text?

I personally type the correct word, as I see no reason to not support text being made digital. It's a worthy cause in my eyes.
One of my friends, however, always types the "F word", and another one of my friends types it wrong, as he feels other users may, in the hope that the incorrect word/phrase appears in some literature. (An example being not including semi-colons, periods, or hyphens, or typing the wrong number/letter if it could be mistaken by some.)
(I made the mistake of sharing this with them; if not for me they wouldn't know the truth of reCAPTCHA 2.) Perhaps I shouldn't have told them. Heck, I probably shouldn't be sharing it with some of the trouble-makers here, but it's open knowledge that everyone has access to, so oh well. Besides, if they wanted the system to be as close to fool-proof as possible, they shouldn't have disclosed the information about reCAPTCHA in the first place.

Suggestions / Introduction/Reference Page
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:29:56 pm »
I think adding a new reference page to the task bar up top would be a great idea.

In my head I'm just thinking a simple static HTML page (could make it more user-involved/nice with some JS though), that has all of the information new/veteran players would need.

Examples:
How to buy and sell supplies, how to add/delete users to/from protection stones, how to add/delete people to/from chests/doors, how to make objects public, how to teleport to other user's homes, etc.

You could also post general information about the server, what sort of plugins you run, what users should do if they're just getting started and looking for something to do/somewhere to build, what trusted can do that normal users can't, etc.

I would personally love something like this, and it would have saved me from asking moderators a number of questions. (And I'm sure it would save me from asking them in the future.)

I know the majority (if not all) of the information is scattered around the forums, but I feel as if this would be much simpler and easy to use and find.

If you decide to use this idea, I would love it if you let me create a base design to show you that you could build off. (I've got a nice clean/simple idea that only uses a small amount of basic JavaScript; I'd be happy to write it myself if I wasn't so busy, but that day won't come for a while.)

-Dave

Edit (More):
A .pdf cheat sheet that includes all of the commands users can use for the server would be nice too. (Can have different .pdfs for users of different ranks too; one for members, trusted, donaters, moderators, etc.)
It would be extremely quick and easy, and hard-copy cheat sheets are very nice to have.

Introductions / Introduction
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:12:09 pm »
I know this is a bit over-due, but I haven't really been on the website for anything other than voting until now.
I'll try to cover some background information related to Minecraft and me as a person; read what you wish.

Basic Minecraft introduction:
My name is Dave, and my UN is "Myskillzownu".

I started playing Minecraft on cracked versions at other people's houses, and one dreadful day I was sick as a dog, in need something to do. I hopped on Minecraft.net, and started playing Classic servers. (Not knowing the difference.) After a while I discovered that it was outdated, so I looked at the full version. I found that the price of Beta was very cheap, and purchased the game.

I've loved Minecraft greatly ever since, and this is only the second server I have enjoyed playing (first got shut down), and I plan on staying here for as long as I play Minecraft.

I play this server with my two roommates, "Jfish75" and "Strid3", and our friend "Tigerwolf117".

About me, what I love, what I know, and what I want:
I'm a technology enthusiast.
It's how I make my money, and it's all I ever plan on doing.

I know my way around Windows 2000, XP, and 7, and I'm fairly good with Linux distributions. I myself prefer to use Linux, and when I can it's what I run on my laptop. (Saving my desktop for Windows-exclusive programs.)
I'm currently running Windows on my laptop only because it's been sent in over 3 times since I got it, and they always re-install Windows. (Got it early December of '11. -- Don't buy Sony, they've gone way down hill.)

I'm good at repairing computers in all aspects, both hardware and software.

I'm also experienced in writing C++, Python, HTML, and CSS; and I'm decent at PHP, JavaScript, and Java. (Only recently started using them.)

My one Dream/Goal:
My dream is to be self-employed, making money through my own websites and programs. I want nothing more than that, and I will never rest until I reach it.
I work good with people, and I don't mind it, but it's not what I really want to do.
The way I look at it (being an atheist), like it short, and you get one shot.
I don't want to waste it just doing what everyone else does, I want to live life doing what I truly love. (Programming, though I guess women could fit too -.^)

MMORPG
The main project that I have going right now is a medieval MMORPG, which I am making with my brother (who has approximately 25 years of computer experience, and is a very smart guy; there's no one I'd rather make a game with than him), my friend (Tigerwolf117 on here), and my friend Riley.
As of right now, my brother creates and rigs the 3D models, my friend Dan does who knows what (he did one thing, then another, then another; we will find out what he truly ends up doing later), my friend Riley does concept drawings and reference drawings for the 3D models, and I am in charge of the programming and the website.
We are using all free programs for this project too. Blender for the models, Panda 3D for the game engine (which I can write the game in with Python), and Komodo for the HTML/CSS/PHP/JavaScript.
The game has been "in the works" for a long, long time now, as schedules never lined up, and everyone depends on everyone.
The biggest roadblock has to have been my brother getting married and having a kid; it's taken up a lot of his free time, and without him and without his models, there is no game.
However, we have recently started back up on the game, and I truly think and hope that we are 100% sticking to it this time.
Once we get a very base game down (lower down than an alpha of an alpha of an alpha of an alpha) and some quality concept work done, I'm going to start on making a video about the game. (Going to make it 100% the best that I can.)
After that's done we're going to post it on kickstarter.com, in the hopes that we can raise some money to really the things rolling. (We want to use the money to hire professionals for a few small things, to make sure this game is the best it can be, and we need the rest to build a good server to start.)

Side Hobby:
I also enjoy creating short films with my friends. I'm by no means a professional, but I've been doing it for a number of years, and I've gotten quite good.
I don't plan on truly going anywhere with that, but I will continue to do it for a long time; it's a great way to let my creative side out, and it's extremely fun.

Helping:
I also enjoy helping people; I always have and I always will.
If anyone needs help with anything, especially if it's related to technology, video production, or photo-editing, let me know. I will be more than happy to help, and if I don't know the solution, I will do my best to help you find it.

I'll stop here, but I'd like to end it with saying this server is great, I plan on staying here for a long time, and I'll do my part to help out whenever I can.
And also, I'm one of the few who has absolutely no intention in becoming staff.
I know that doesn't need to be said, I just want everyone to know that if I help people, it's not in the hopes that I get something in return; I'm just here to play the game, have fun, and help out.
