Why you should become a moderator: Over the course of the last nine months, I have fallen in love with this server. Now, as I reflect on the wonderful experience that I have had, I find that I crave the opportunity to help enhance the playing experience of others, just as the current staff has done for me.

I am helpful, knowledgeable, mature, level-headed, and eager to help in any way that I can. Most importantly, though, I am a very present player, having played over 2 hours per day (on average) since I joined the server -all without a single ban. I KNOW that if I am selected as moderator, I will be able to help maintain order, aid members with a calm and polite demeanor, and work with my fellow staff members to keep this wonderful server functioning at its normal, amazing level.

Suggestions / Pedometer Command
« on: July 02, 2013, 05:10:39 am »
I think that there should be a pedometer function, especially in light of the recent horse update. This would really help people measure track lengths. This would also help people measure block placement for larger builds.

The only two functions necessary would be:
/ped read     -- outputs the number of steps taken since "/ped clear" was typed.
/ped clear    -- restarts the count

Summary

Winterfell is a kingdom that was built in the spirit of cooperation. Originally a city within a castle, it soon became apparent that the city would outgrow the walls into which it was built. As a result, the city was formed outside of the wall, while a personal, mini-city remains developing within.

Winterfell hosts countless FREE resources for its citizens to utilize, including a full-sized (32x32) spleef arena, countless farms, awesome workshops, multiple xp-grinders, party spaces, game arenas, and NPC trading villages.

Citizenship

Citizens of Winterfell are those players who have purchased a plot of land within the city. While plot price varies with plot size, all citizens are equally entitled to unlimited use of the kingdom's resources -including it's farms, workshops, xp grinders, party spaces, game arenas, and NPC trading villages. In exchange, citizens are only expected to replant and rebreed what they claim and be respectful of other citizens.

Unfortunately, Winterfell is NOT currently accepting applications for citizenship. Keep posted, though: applications will open soon.

Support / Reporting Felix_De_Kat
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:22:21 pm »
I am a fairly quiet player who prides myself self on my altruism, helpfulness, and respectfulness. I love Opticraft, which is why I have played almost exclusively here for a half-year (Last month, I even donated to the server -something quite remarkable for a starving college student). This server has the most helpful, and friendliest staff members of any server I have ever... which is why I was so upset by being treated poorly by one of the same.

On 30 April, 2013 at 2:40pm, I was online when I realized that one of my (IRL) friends had hacked into my account (real hacking. We are 4th year Computer Science Students) and played a prank on me. Effectively, he had moved one of my /homes over an open trap door so that anytime that I warped there I would fall 256 blocks to my death (Admittedly, hilarious). I tried for about 10 minutes to correct the situation, but ended up doing more harm than good.

Frustrated and desperate, I turned /helpop to ask if anyone with fly privileges could simply help me close the trap door I kept falling through. It was at this point that Felix_De_Kat (on global chat) called me out, exasperatingly saying that he "would never help me close a trap door". I asked him to ignore the ticket, then, if he didn't want to help me.

He then (in global) went on to call me 'irresponsible' and told me (in global, still) with equal parts condescension and sarcasm that maybe, in time, I would "learn how to responsibly use /helpop".

I understandably felt insulted. For a person who was supposed to ensure a pleasant experience on the server, Felix_De_Kat was being decidedly unpleasant towards me -all because I got the nerve up to ask for help. I demanded that he apologize -not for being un-helpful, but for mocking me and being disrespectful in front of the entire server. Instead, he kicked me from the server in front of everyone. I rejoined about a minute later to find, much to my humiliation, the entire server talking about me.

I know that his behavior isn't representative of the staff on Opticraft as a whole, but I do want to bring this issue to your attention. I believe that, regardless of if a moderator is helping out a member or enforcing server rules, they should remember that they are representing Opticraft as a staff member and, thus, should do so politely (or at the very least un-insultingly).

Thank you for taking the time to read this. You guys rock!

Trade Central / Prototype: Advanced Vending Machine
« on: March 29, 2013, 04:43:30 am »
I have created an original vending machine design and have decided to debut it on Opticraft! It has some features that I haven't seen created ANYWHERE else... and I am still looking to improve upon it!

As of now, it:
- only accepts ONE type of input as payment
- stops taking input once it has run out of stock to give
- is programmable to vend at a ratio of 1:1-1:8 (output:input)
- it's stock holding is infinitely expandable

You can go to '/home mcoon1' to see the creation. Here, I have created the prototype vending machine and programmed it to take in pieces of dirt and output 1/4 the amount of cobblestone (later this will be changed to take in gold nuggets and output something valuable). Feel free to test out the machine and make any suggestions that you think would improve it!

The kingdom of Winterfell is quickly developing into a premier kingdom of Opticraft, and we would like YOUR city/country to build an embassy within our city walls!

Accepted applicants will:
  • be given the title of 'Diplomat of [Your City/Country]' within the kingdom of Winterfell
  • be granted building rights to Winterfell
  • be given a plot of land (no smaller than 11x11) with which you are invited to build an embassy that reflects the style of your city/country

The plot will be placed on 'Embassy Row' in a gated section of the city. There are no restrictions on what can be built within this plot, provided that it does not violate the rules of the server or the rules of common courtesy.

Request
The amount of land requested for the city is based upon some careful considerations; Namely, what we have and what we plan to develop. In the map above, everything that we have built is numbered and contained in the green zone. Immediate development plans are contained in the yellow zone. Afterward, we plan to expand to the red zone to add our final city elements.
Our detailed construction plan is outlined below.

•   Possibly More!

I understand that city protection is for cities, not blank land... so I ask that you at least protect the green and yellow areas on the map above, and allow us to expand protection into the red area once we are ready to do so.

Rational
The main reasons that I want to have city protection is so that I can share this build. As things stand, we have built quite a few large and profitable sites. I would LOVE to share these with people, but I am afraid that advertising would just beckon (even more) griefers. Should I have city rights, I would have enough control over the build that I would be comfortable enough to bring in more collaborators. Also, I would be able to open some of the city’s wonderful resources to more of the minecraft community without having to fear for it getting griefed.

I humbly ask that you consider this application so that months of hard work can finally be made public, and the city of Winterfell can move into the future stronger than ever!

Suggestions / /hoem command
« on: January 04, 2013, 09:42:44 am »
I know that this may seem silly to most, but I can't tell you how many times I have hastily typed "/hoem mcoon1" by accident, only to have to retype "/home mcoon1". This simple, yet unavoidable product of quick typing annoys me to no end.

I KNOW that I am not the only one who does stuff like this. Since the command /hoem will never be implemented otherwise, is there any way we could rig this command to be interpreted identical to /home? I think that this would add a really nice user friendly touch to our server.

Suggestions / Reform for top_voter rewards
« on: December 19, 2012, 01:08:35 am »
I don't know if any of you follow the "top voter" ranking quite like I do, but the more that I look at it, the more that I realize how ineffective this is.

I understand that the "top voter" rewards are meant as an incentive to get people to vote as often as they can, but the commitment that is required to get into one of the top 3 spots is CRAZY. For example, 18 days into the month, there are still people who have voted EVERY TIME POSSIBLE.

While this commitment is great (kudos, guys!), I think that there needs to be some sort of reward for the people who aren't able to obsessively commit to voting. In other words, we need an incentive that encourages people to keep voting regularly even should they miss a few instances of voting (which would normally disqualify them from the current "top voter" competition).

Perhaps we could: extend how many places get rewards? count each vote as a ticket for a raffle?

General Discussion / Pistons getting stuck 'open'
« on: November 24, 2012, 12:07:42 pm »
I found a few threads on the forum that talked about pistons getting stuck open. I encountered a similar problem today, and I think that I may have figured out what was causing it (Rather than necro-post on one of these threads, I decided to create a new topic with my findings).

I realized that I had a protection stone that covered the square that the piston extended into, BUT NOT the square that the piston's base sat on. This caused it to become 'stuck' after it extended. Removing the PS solved the problem!

Is this, perhaps, a problem that could be fixed so that players don't just have to work around the glitch?

Support / Live map hasn't updated in over 2 days...
« on: November 23, 2012, 06:43:02 pm »
I know that this isn't really a personal issue, but I sometimes use the Live map to validate the appearance of large structures and it hasn't updated in over 2 days.

I do not know if this is normal, but I thought that I would point it out in case something had locked up. If it is normal... ignore this post!

Introductions / Now introducing... MCoon1!
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:02:30 am »
Hey guys! Just thought I'd check in here. I'm pretty hesitant to approach people in-game... so this is perfect for me!

In real life, I am an american college student, studying computer science and computer engineering. I love to run and program computers.

In-game, I am a methodical builder with expert skills and knowledge and an innate sense of detail. I have been playing Minecraft for well over 2 years. I always practice form over function, but I HATE cheesy looking builds. My studies in school have allowed me to create some pretty intricate red stone projects, and I love nothing more than to champion a massive build.

I'm always willing to help, so let me know if you guys ever need anything!

Support / Connecting from a known proxy
« on: November 19, 2012, 01:23:58 am »
I am trying to access the server from my desktop at my apartment (which happens to be on a college campus). I keep getting the message:

Quote
You are connecting from a known proxy (209.135.141.57). Appeal at www.opticraft.net

I think that this has something to do with my using a shared network. Is there anyway that I can have this fixed?
