Title: In search of a PS talent.
Post by: Toxicstriker91 on December 14, 2011, 04:59:32 pm
Ok guys, im in search of someone who has nice/pro skills with Photoshop. I want to make a wallpaper for SoL(Statue of Liberty) but my skills in PS dont allow me to do what i envisioned. Monkey suggested we get a pic of SoL and use NY(Irl pic) for background. If someone has an idea to make or has the skill to make it or do enitrely different wallpaper design we will be very greatful. We will put the wallpaper as front pic of our project at planetminecraft.com and we will ofc give credit to the one with the best wallpaper.

I'm far from what you would call a pro but sure, I'll give it a shot. What size is the BG going to be? Also, do you have a pic of SoL that I can use? It is really hard to get a good SS of it with the walls being so close and the signs being in the way.

Size doesn't really matter, but try to make it as big as you think you can handle :P Our current picture is 1280x714 but they will all be scaled down to 640x400 on the website. The original will be kept tho and can be viewed too, so don't hesitate to give it all you got.

Getting a decent picture of SoL is proving to be harder than I thought.

Here's an album with a few different shots of the SoL from a few different angles, maybe someone can use one of these to make something.

http://imgur.com/a/lmxwi#10

Let me know if you want a different one from a different angle taken, and I can also remove walls to get a more full shot of it if you want.  In these pics I took the welcome signs out.

No offence but can do better one than this and im not nearly at 10% of what we have envisioned about it. Sry.

We are still waiting for nicks pics. Nick if you are reading this and have not already started on the wallpapers you can use those pics that matt made. Im leaving you to decide what do do with the wallpaper. :P I now know that yo have exams(or tests) and stuff, so take care of those first.

Offtopic: I got top grade on the mechanics test today.

I'd be happy to take more screenshots but I have two finals today and two tomorrow.  I might be able to spend a little bit of time today when they're finished but if I can it won't be much.  I'll try and see if I can get some taken today.  I'll look around planetminecraft if I can, mind sharing the link to where the SoL is posted?

To remove the fog I found this guide: http://www.worldofminecraft.com/NoFog
You'll need a Hex Editor of some sort, and even though the guide says to modify the file within the minecraft.jar file, you will probably need to modify the file that was extracted into the folder "lib/minecraft". That's what I had to do anyways.

And to remove the signs in front of it I just copied the world and hosted it on a local private server and deleted the signs :)

Here's an album of pics taken in pretty much the same angle as those on planetminecraft, but these are with no fog and no minecraft UI

http://imgur.com/a/cjtsk#7

and here is an album of some more pics, maybe some are good, maybe not, you can decide:

Now with no block in hand:

These are the Word2010 names:

My name is in Vivaldi,
Toxic's is Matisse ITC,
Xoiiku's in Jokerman and
Opticraft is in Curlz MT.

Vivaldi is the same as the one Matt linked to btw.

You should add some shadow effects to the statue, I think that would look good.
Other than that it looks awesome :D

Ok ill try explain(i hope). When you(its same with me) put that sol over the background its more than obvious that its montage. Thats the thing that buggs me. I dont say it can be completly removed because after all sol is in blocks, but can you try making the transition between sol and the background smoother (blur effect doenst do the job when i try it)? I dont know if its possible and how to do it, but if you manage to somehow do it, it will be epic.
I hope you understood me now :)

The lighting and shadows have to match the BG. good luck, I like what you have so far Nick.

Ill give it a shot tonight, i could try to do a bit of smudging. Ill also try to add a drop shadow effect from the statue.

This what it looks like when i added the shadow, let me know if you want a different angle for the shadow or if you want the shadow to go out farther or in more. Ill get rid of all the crappy white spaces tonight.

I am not the right person because I havent designed it.
But, could you try to place lower the title of Opticraft, with low contrast of the city as background? something with low transparency.
Moreover, to change the degrees of the shadow, like the sun to be from above and left.
Finally, to use a better picture of SOL because the face is very very bad. Everyone can understnd if they see it that it is the Sol, but few will admire it if they see that pic..

Sorry to tell you but that is what SoL looks like at that angle. Toxic has told me to use that angle so that is the angle i will use. And the shadow effect is from the top left.

As far as the text goes can you please clarify what you mean?

I wouldn't mind you taking a better shot from another angle if you can get it. I would prefer you making something like this (http://blog.reneestrauss.com/wpx-content/uploads/2011/06/20090302000202Statue_of_Liberty_NY2.jpg), this (http://www.statueofliberty.org/photos/statue_of_liberty_03.jpg) or this (http://www.globetourguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/The-Statue-of-Liberty-in-New-York-City.jpg).

All those shots would be near impossible due to the world size.

Well if it were easy we could have done it ourselves right :P

A good thing to start with would be to get the SoL out of the ground. You will need a 256x256x1024 world for that. With the no-fog mod you have, it should be very easy to get far enough away and get pretty much exactly the angle you need. Or just take the shot from closer and zoom it smaller. I kinda don't care how it's done :P. The problem we need to handle is that the SoL, and the face in particular, kinda suck from up close, so a picture from further away should solve this problem.

Ok.. I could explain you all of the from the beginning.
First of all, I think you got the pictures you wanted. Well Done Matt.
Secondly, the shadow, could me more extended, and to fall over some buildings. (I will explain you later why..)
Thirdly, the label to be on the bottom, without coloured background, but as background the city, buildings, etc.. with low transparency, like your breath on the window(can you see ouside clearly?).
Moreover, can you place it in the middle to be superior over other buildings? I mean to be the major object in the picture.
Explanation: When you want to show something, it need to be shown(well shown). So, you make the shadow to fall over the other buildings to show the majesty of this object. These are some ideas only.. What I can offer here..
I hope I helped a little a bit..

This is a big no no for graphic design. Studies show peoples eyes tend to focus on the left side of images more and placing it in the middle would make it look too cluttered imo. I don't think we are going to use the same SoL pic anyways.

I try to don't be like that, because that semester, I prepared in group of 3, a project 42.000 words..+ presentation+150 surveys.. In 40 days, and I had also my individual projects( presentations, individual work, business plan, midterms, finals,etc...)
