Title: College tuition
Post by: Kurseddragon on March 23, 2013, 06:48:48 pm
Anyone got tips on paying for this shit?
Pulling out loans would put me in debt for the rest of my life.

School tuition: $40k a year.
What do I do?

Counselors at the colleges can help you locate scholarships and grants.

Local business's and clubs/lodges sometimes have programs to support their members/family's.

Ask major business's like Walmart, K-Mart, Fry's, Safeway, etc - gather information on scholarship/grant programs.

If you don't know what a grant is. It is money that is awarded to you that you do not have to pay back. Normally to acquire one requires well written essays - usually the essay is "Why should you receive a scholarship/grant." But everyplace has its own requirements like community service, membership, or just knowing the right people.

As I said before, just go around to local business's, social clubs/bars, colleges, even your old high school. Get info on who you should talk to about scholarships/grants and then go find the right people who can actually help you.

----

When I graduated, I received just over 10,000 in scholarships/grants just because I applied for a lot of low requirement grants and received a scholarship from my high school after meeting with my teachers, councilors, etc.

Move to Europe, college is free there.
(or to Israel, we pay about 1/4 of what you pay)

That's insane, are you out of state? Because that would explain it.

50 or 60k? I'm hoping that's like board books and all lol I would kill over if I had to pay that much

And I've heard work studies are usually good ways to get money, and if you haven't filled your FASFA yet I'd do it soon

Or you can always swim to Europe.

If I were to go to Boston University, I would pay 56k a year in-state tuition.

In-state and out-of-state are the same for Boston.

It's known for being an expensive school, but honestly, I don't have much choice.
Denied to all my other good colleges and accepted to a bunch of free apps I did for fun.

Awaiting: (Idk why it's taking so long)
CSU Fullerton

Denials:
UC Santa Cruz
UC San Diego
San Diego State University
CSU Long Beach

Accepted:
University of Oregon
University of Tampa
Drexel
Duquesne University
Northern Arizona University
The King's College: New York
And idk how, but
Boston University (I literally didn't reach any of the requirements, and they still accepted me)

And I did fill out FAFSA.
Turns out Boston requires CSS Profile too, but no one told me it existed and was due by February 15th.
Hopefully I can file it next semester and from then on to get a further discount.

Do you need to go to a university at this time?

Perhaps go to a community college for now complete courses you require for universities or simply for your future career(s), get your GPA up, etc.

While universities are very beneficial, community colleges meet a ton of needs for those who want to make ends meet or even securing their financial future's.

Mind the fact that eventually you'll need to attend a university for your career, but it's not an immediate requirement for any job, provided you've taken the necessary courses.

School for me is about 30-35k depending on if I decide to take Nissan courses #TechSchoolprobs. But Tiggy is right, settling something with fafsa is a good way to go. Thats what I did and you dont really have to worry about paying til 6 months after graduation, or 6 months after withdrawing. Ofcourse paying/saving up while attending is a good thing. One of my friends is waiting on CSU Fullerton aswell.

I'm tired of my home and community college is literally my last option. I hate being home.
I'd rather (probably wouldn't) go to one the random college acceptances I got than go to a community college.

And as I said, I did file FAFSA, but not CSS Profile.

I'll just worry about the money later.

Sometime community colleges are the way to go, some offer pretty good programs/majors like forensics, welding, medical assisting, culinary arts, etc. I guess it all comes down to what you are planning on majoring in, or decide if you just want to further your education and begin picking. I chose to become an auto tech. and I had a bunch of choices and opportunities, found a few people who graduated from each school, got their honest opinions, spoke with college reps and based my decisions off that. One of the schools I was interested in was a community college somewhere in Maine and the main reason why i turned it down was because its shop area had basically no breathing room and the facility itself sucked.

I know it's financially beneficial, but there's no way I'd be happy doing it.
College is for life, I don't feel like starting the first two years being unmotivated to do anything and just hating it.
I don't feel it's worth it to save some money and transfer to some place I could already be accustomed to for years in advance.

Just my opinion since I hate my home; at first I wanted to go out-of-state, but I started reconsidering it when I really started thinking about it. I knew I didn't wanna go to community, it basically wasn't an option.

I started off getting crappy acceptances, but nothing I was interested in.
I started getting denied to places I wanted to go, all in-state.

My priority school got denied, then the next, then the last priority; for in-state.
So all in-state was denied except CSU Fullerton (Which won't matter if I get accepted or denied).

I got Oregon, but didn't have anything I wanted to major in (At that time; right now I'm not sure).
Then I got University of Tampa, which did have my major, but I stopped being interested in the school shortly before being accepted, so didn't matter.
Then Duquesne gave me a $14k scholarship, but again, didn't have my major.

I thought Boston was gonna for sure deny me, so I wasn't sure what I was gonna do, but after I got accepted, it was basically a 100% yes until I saw the costs.

$60k a year is insane, but it's a good school, so it should leave me with a good job or at least a good experience.
Gotta do something with my life. :P

Sorry, for my pre-college life story. Lol.
