Were you recommended by anyone?: No.
Why you should become a moderator: I will assist the current staff with the banning of griefers, the moderating of chat, and all other duties of a moderator. I am Trusted and have an extensive history with this server. With great power comes great responsibility. I recognize that being a moderator is serious business, and I will treat it as such. I believe that I can contribute to the server by filling another position of the staff. I hope you consider me for this position.

Suggestions / /Dissappear Not Entirely Failproof
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:29:10 am »
I've been hearing claims that when players type /nearby and a disappeared mod is close, it shows their name and that when typing in local and a disappeared mod is close, it does not say "No one hears you." I decided to test this for myself to see if there is any way for a player to tell if a disappeared mod is nearby. Here are my results:

/Nearby gives the name: FALSE. Even though a disappeared mod was standing right next to me, /nearby still said "None!"

Chatting in local doesn't say "No one hears you": TRUE. With a disappeared mod standing right next to me, saying a line in local chat did not say "No one hears you." It said nothing, meaning that another player received the message.

Conclusion: This is a problem. Disappeared mods should not be able to be detected in any way, especially by players trying to avoid the law. Since there is a way for disappeared mods to be detected, this means that griefers could type lines into local chat and skedaddle when "No one hears you" doesn't show up. I believe this should be fixed as soon as possible to make moderation more effective.

Special thanks to Kodak28 for helping me with the test.

Helpful articles / Read Before Trading Diamonds
« on: December 28, 2012, 06:39:39 pm »
This article is aimed at new players to the SMP server. If you have played for at least a month, you probably already know what is said in this article.

Nearly every day, I see a new player saying "Selling diamonds at my /home for $500 each! Come quickly!" only to be flustered when nobody comes to buy them. If this is you, then there is something very important you should know. Everyone is able to earn 5 free diamonds each day. You can do this by voting. At some point, you've probably gotten a pop-up message while browsing the forums asking you to vote. If you click this message, you will be taken to the voting page. Enter your username, click vote, fill out the caption, then repeat for the next website. For every website you do this for, you will receive a free diamond ingame. Thus, you can get 5 free diamonds daily (every 12 hours on XtremeTop100; every 24 hours for the other 3 websites). Consequently, the price of diamonds has fallen tremendously.

But the market says diamonds are $750 each!

That's true, the market does say that. But the market prices are based on an item's natural value (in this case, how much diamonds would be worth if the only way to obtain them was by mining). The market does not account for earning diamonds by voting, otherwise the price would be about $50. You may notice that there is no sell sign for diamonds at the market. This is intentional: if you could make $2500 daily with no overhead, the server's economy would be skewed.

So how much are diamonds worth, then?

About $50. Even then, most people won't buy them unless they can't wait until they can vote again to have diamonds. That being said, using diamonds in trades is fruitless, as the person you are trading with most likely has stacks of them in a chest, which brings me to another point: always negotiate trades before giving anything. Several people have come to my shop wanting to buy something and threw their items in the "Give" channel without saying anything. After a minute of me doing nothing, they angrily demand the item. I usually sell items for money and not other items, so I tell them that they have not paid. They respond "Isn't what I gave you enough??" (Usually one of the given items is a diamond). I reply that I asked for a cash payment, and that I considered the items given to be a donation, since they did not ask if they could be used as payment, to which the answer would have been no. At this point, they usually storm out of the shop without even asking for their items back.

TL;DR

Everyone can receive 5 diamonds daily by voting. The average sell price of diamonds is $50. Always negotiate a trade before giving items.

Helpful articles / How To Report a Spambot
« on: December 19, 2012, 03:14:39 am »
Update: This is obsolete, and it has been requested by operators that players not report spam posts at all. Please do not use the report to moderator button if it is available to you.

Occasionally, we get a poster who advertises some sort of product or posts a bunch of links on the forums. This is called a spambot. They, as their name suggests, spam the forums. Their posts usually look something like this:
(click to show/hide)
They get in the way of normal forum discussion and need to be banned. If you see one, you can help out the operators tremendously by reporting them. You may think this entails a private message to an active moderator, but it doesn't. It's actually much easier. At the bottom of each post, you should see a button that looks like this:

If you click this button, it will send an e-mail to an operator telling them about the flagged post. Immediately after clicking the button, it will take you to a page that asks you for a comment about why the post needs to be reported. Just type "Spam" into the textbox and then continue. That's it! The post should be deleted soon. Of course, if you see any other post that needs to be deleted for any reason, you can click the report to moderator button and enter the reason in the textbox.

General Discussion / Mob Grinder
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:41:18 pm »
I'm thinking of building a large mob grinder like this one. I realize that this requires 2 lava source blocks. I'm wondering if a mod would be allowed to place these, if I would have to modify existing lava, or if it's allowed at all. I'd rather not go through all of the work to find out that it's not allowed, so I'm posting this first.

« on: October 05, 2012, 06:46:55 pm »
Hello all,

Today, my friend generously offered to buy me Minecraft if I paid for part of it. I gave him $15, and hopefully he will send me a gift code by tomorrow. If all goes well, I will be on the SMP server very soon!

Support / Voting Clock
« on: October 03, 2012, 02:41:24 am »
I, like many others, are "obsessive voters." We sort of camp over the vote button, voting every 12 and 24 hours as necessary. However, recently I noticed that the timer for when to vote seems not to be working. I came to vote about 12 hours after I had done so this morning, and it told me to wait six minutes. I did so, then tried again. However, it told me to wait six minutes again. I was pretty sure there was a problem by now, but I went ahead and waited. I came back, and it told me to wait again. Could someone please investigate this?

General Discussion / Necroposting Punishments
« on: September 19, 2012, 02:46:13 am »
I'm just curious: do we have a set punishment for necroposting multiple times? If not, I would suggest a one day forum ban for three necroposts in one day, then a one week if they keep necroposting. I don't think it's fair to perma-ban for necroposting, so I would say keep giving them one-week bans until they get it through their heads not to necropost.
