Title: Vote banner competition
Post by: optical on July 02, 2012, 11:52:32 pm
Server ip: smp.opticraft.net

We have decided to launch a competition to design us a new, slicker vote banner that we can use on vote websites.
The winner of the competition will receive $60 worth of donation rewards, which can be exchanged on either SMP or classic servers. We may chuck in more prizes later if the submissions are of really high quality, especially if there are a number of top notch ones which we think deserve a reward. We will then replace our current banner with the winning one, and any banner we decide to use will receive some form of compensation.

What we need from you is a banner, like our current one shown below.
The image must be 468x60 and be of .png or .gif type.
You can make it animated, but try and keep the file size less than 2-3MB.
You can submit as many banners as you like, so go crazy if you wish.
The banner must contain the server ip on it, and it should be very visible.
Anyone can enter, including staff.
By submitting your banner, you are giving us rights to use your image - even if it is not the final winner in the competition.

To submit your banner, post it in the thread here: http://www.opticraft.net/index.php/topic,11377.0.html
If you have any questions, ask in this thread and we will reply.

The competition will end in 2-3 weeks, but we may start using any of the awesome banners that have been submitted sooner.

I have never tried something like that.
But, It would be my honor if I could create something equal to the preferred quality.
So, except from photoshop, is there any other program I could use?

Gimp is a little confusing, but it gets the job done.

For the free editing programs GIMP is probably one, if not the, best. If you can get your hands on Photoshop all the better.
Or if your skills don't quite exceed dejected's go for  the old fasioned MS Paint, people will come screaming for more of your artwork.

I made this on BannerSnack because they advertised a free gif download, but does not seem to be the case. Does anyone have a way around this to access the image for free?

Please do not use banner websites to make the banners, they keep watermarks and it doesn't look nice

Ok I have made a banner (in flash) but I have no idea as how to make it appear in the forums, it's a .swf file.
I would spend time looking for the solution but I have to make dinner now :).

Title: Re: Vote banner competition

Honestly, this banner competition makes no sense to me.

It's asking for multiple submissions, which is fine, but then Nick states they're just looking for something plain and simple with normal font and not too much going on.

Ironically, the current banner, whether trying to or not, has a lot going on and the font is not "normal" like we've been asked to use.

It's pretty difficult to design something to your liking when the standards are being hypocritical toward themselves and there's nothing to base it off of.

I think it'd help by posting rules of what would be ok and what wouldn't be.
'Cause asking for something plain, simple, with normal font, isn't enough for someone to create a banner to fit what you're looking for.
And yes, I know if you knew what you were looking for, you wouldn't be having this competition. I'm just asking for a general idea that's not as basic as just plain, simple, with normal font.

The whole point is we are changing it. And The current banner doesn't have a lot going in. It is 1 pic with text over top of it, I made it that way on purpose.

As for the contest, I havnt talked to opti in a while but I assume we are keeping it going until we find a banner we like. Not to be so blunt but we currently dont think any of the submissions are what we are looking for. As for what we are looking for, plain and simple is the best i can describe it, when it comes to digital graphics you may find that the customer isnt always 100% on what they want.

Though the current banner was made simply, due to the fact that the single picture chosen has a lot going on inside it, causes the banner to seem less simple.

If you're looking for simple in a way of making it, such as taking the current banner for example. Meaning, using one picture, one frame, one text and calling it simple and plain, even if the picture itself could cause it to technically not be plain, then that's a different story. However, it's asking to restrict a lot of potential that could be done by the banner creator in order to enhance, not necessarily add, into a banner they're creating.

I'm just saying that you guys are asking for something, and with all these submissions and no new advice, you're more than likely not going to be getting different results.

It wouldn't make a difference, obviously no matter what anyone does isn't going to impress them.
I don't think that's their point anyway.

I'm assuming they're looking for a banner that's more professional rather than amazing. However, when asking for something professional and simple with no sliver of an example whatsoever, and some of the most vague advice possible, it's not going to be easy for anyone to create what they desire.

We've tried to leave it as unconstrained as possible, since we're not sure exactly what we're after. The reason it hasn't been drawn yet is because we haven't had enough submissions that we thought would make a good fit.

If you're looking to submit more and want some advice - perhaps try something new or different from the rest of the submissions. Have a look at the world of warcraft and banners for other games on the vote sites, even other minecraft servers. Perhaps they can give you some idea's (Don't steal anything!).

Use the select tool to grab the actual image and manually expand it that way.
That's the most basic way you can do it, I'm assuming you don't have Photoshop, so I gave instructions you can do with Paint. :P

I believe it is going untill we find one (or a few) which stand out from the rest, not saying they are all not good quality as there are some which stand out, but when there is a special one. By the way, I like the simplicity of yours Mono - it's pretty nice.

Obviously I'm not in control of this as optical is, but from what I've heard this is happening.

Just a random question:
Are you willing to change the banner a couple of times?

If you are, you may as well change the current one to your front runner and when this competition ends (Meaning, you have the actual winner), you can change it to that.

May keep things fresh. :O
