Gibbon is spot on with what I'm talking about. It gets boring with lots of slices.  If only there was a way to automate that! Lol

That reminds me about a minor annoyance that if fixed would be able to save lots of time when crafting melon blocks. Not being able to shift click slice stacks into a crafting area.  >:(

Sorry to revive an old thread but I have had a different angle on making bank.  What do people think about automation as a way to improve the whole melon/pumpkin productivity?  I do agree that there is a distinct advantage to pumpkins since they do not require post-harvest crafting... but melon slices are also a source of food if necessary while pumpkins are not.  I've been engineering pumpkin/melon farms that (semi)automatically harvest thus saving time.  Is that enough to overcome the added time spent on crafting blocks from slices?

Ban Appeals / Re: My first Ban Hammer Experience

OK.  Looks like I will have to face it and serve my 7 day ban.  I'll learn my lesson.

You were banned by a grief trap, it's a 7 day ban. Takes 5 breaks to be banned by one.

OK... I am a complete noob when it comes to this so let me get some clarification:  There are traps set up throughout the server to trap griefers?  And if you break more than 5 blocks in the trap it sets off the trap and drops the ban hammer?

Since this is my first offense in the wrong place at the wrong time... is their any way to get the 7 day ban waved or reduced. I don't mean any harm.

I know... right!  Some areas like that have pretty treacherous terrain.  And with homes built haphazardly in there it's hard to get out without breaking blocks or your neck.

This is totally my bad...

So when exploring an area just outside of the spawn I fell into some crevices and had to dig/build my way out.  I ended up in someone's house... where I ended up breaking some things as I was trying to get out.  As one would expect... the Ban Hammer struck.

I should have probably just warped out of there.  I'll be sure to do that next time.  I apologize to who ever's house it was.  How can I make it up to you?

Let me know what king of ban I am facing and what I need to do to right this wrong.

Suggestions / Re: Things I think should be added to the market

Try making a piston door.

WITHOUT stiky pistons...

DONE... !!!

A simple 1x2 door:  where []-| is a piston (non sticky variety)

[]-|{block}Opening|-[]
[]-|{block}Opening|-[]

1) Activate pistons on the left with a button to move blocks right to seal the opening
2) Activate pistons on right with button to move blocks left to clear the opening.

It's not large or elegant... but it's functional.

 ;D ;)

None of this needs to be sold in the market as all of the materials for crafting are out there in the wild and can be mined and gathered.  I can kind of sort of see the argument for slimes to be sold... but only at a VERY VERY high cost since they are so rare.

They way I look at it though is since slimes are so rare... the challenge is figuring out how to engineer and do things without slimes and sticky pistons.  That's the challenge of a survival server.

OK... that's really interesting.  It makes sense.  Not sure this info will be helpful for playing the game but since I'm kind of an "amateur computer hobbyist"  on the side so I'm always interested in learning how computers/servers/games, etc. work.

Thanks!

Support / Server Inner workings and lag
« on: May 23, 2012, 04:42:01 pm »
A week or so ago I posted a topic about animals not following when you have wheat in hand.  I was told this is just lag from the server.  Some days I was able to get animals to follow... other days, not so much.

I also have encountered a mob spawner that seems more active at spawning on some days than others.

I'm wondering if things like this are uniform across the map.  Are server RAM and resources directed preferentially more towards the areas at the center of the map as opposed to the outskirts?  Or are they directed preferentially towards areas where there are many players at any given moment in time?

I know a bit on how servers work but not too much on the inner workings of Minecraft servers.

I think automation is the key for making profit out of melon farming.  A decrease in price just means that a creative increase in automation capacity needs to take place.  Pumpkins should give a slight edge because they don't require crafting... but automated farms can easily be converted back and forth between melons and pumpkins.

Just a note... I joined the server after the melon prices were reduced.  I was not here for the glory days of high melon prices.  I've been trying to figure out how to make money from melons at the current lower rates using automation and novel farming techniques.

I don't think I can help you ... but can I have some of the bones from those thousands of skeletons?  :P
