You can place the protection stone anywhere, on top of your house, in your house, or under your house.

Hey thanks for the help everyone, appreciate it! For now I can just use the coal ore until I have enough for diamond.

@ryan: Well I want my entire house protected.. including the roof. That means the blocks have to be placed half-way between the roof and the floor. It looks kind of silly and you can see it in plain sight but I guess I can live with it for now.

According to my research, protection stones cover the area on all sides of it. So doing the math, a coal ore would protect five blocks above, left, right, behind, infront, and below the protection stone.

If you would like, I could trade you a lapiz ore for 10 diamonds (just a suggustion).

Exactly. At this moment I am using 4 coal ore for my house + 2 more for the farm in the back yard. I sold a ton of diamonds to some dude the other day so I'm all out for now.
