also i noticed you have the white text problem, I found a fix.
If you use optifine you can get a custom ni.class and the chat colors will be restored,
you can find the custom ni.class by googling something like "minecraft white text fix" and find the right link.
You'll have to wait till optifine is updated for 1.2.4 to do so.
