          im recently new & i had to build my house underground due to lack of room & protection from griefers ... the AMAZING staff on opticraft recovered his house ;) X

My biggest suggestion to new players is to start making money as soon as you can.  If that means selling stacks of cobble for $15 just so you can buy the coal protection stones, then do it.  That's what I did, haven't been griefed yet (fingers crossed)...

I hope you mean "unless they've been inactive for a really long time."
