Bigger Plots vs. Smaller Plots

With coal protection, it allows for better control and flexibility if the land that you are claiming is not square or rectangular, even though the amount of land they protect as a whole is pretty minuscule.

That is exactly my opinion. Coal is better as you don't have to make your protection square. I think diamond is something like 2% money off, which isn't that much when compared to price of it. My advice would be to go with coal/lapis unless you have a special reason.

I have no idea where you got that 2%, did you just make it up? Diamond is massively reduced compared to coal, 44% off to be precise.

The reason for this is that each stone protects 8x the area of the previous one. Coal protects 11x11x11, so 1331 blocks. Diamond protects 41x41x41, so 68921 blocks total.

Buying the more expensive ones allows you to protect more area for substantially less.
Using coal allows you to place highly granular fields, but costs more and requires you to have coal all over your build.

The choice is yours as to what you value more - money and appearance, or field granularity.

Indeed it seemed I did make it up somewhere inside my brain. I haven't looked at the prices in a while, and the last I remember was Diamond being $98,000 and my tired brain (I have had something like 2 hours sleep in the last 36 hours.) made a 2% connection (98,000 = 10000 - 2000? I don't even know...). Please ignore me, I should have checked the prices.

I do apologize... I was somewhat inebriated when I asked this question. Simple math does indeed prove it. If this thread could be locked/deleted I would be much less embarrassed. :P Lesson learned.

No problem, it is a common question and I think this will have helped some others understand the pricing too.

I believe that the best choice is lapis, witht he 10,000$.
I would prefer diamonds if I had a great location, and I wanted to protect itm no matter what..
Till now, I have 5-6 coal and one lapiz for my slime chunk.

About the blocks, I have cleared many of the 11x11x11 but and a lapis area.. Damn.. I have mined a lot to wrong layer..:P
I could be rich with that minning.. ;D
