It does say in the official release notes that the ability to collect spawners was disabled :p

-Silk Touch does not work on monster spawners nor ice (as of Minecraft 1.0.0).

-Items able to be obtained legitimately only through use of silk touch:

Grass Block
Coal Ore
Lapis Lazuli Ore
Diamond Ore
Redstone Ore
All huge mushroom blocks
Mycelium
*unable on our SMP

So silk touch is basically useless :P

I wouldn't say that....but In a way, yes it kinda is, but grass and mycelium are still good
