Why not just modify the current "opticalza has joined the game" message for the first join? "opticalza has joined the game for the first time. Welcome to opticraft!"

Seems like this approach solves the spam issue and identifies new players.

That's what the suggestion was, and I agree. This is pretty much the best solution.

There's nothing wrong with a little chat spam if everyone is greeting a new player.

It would make him or her feel immediately accepted. It would make the new player feel like everyone wants to play with said player instead of going on their own and leaving that player to be more alone.
