It would be better if it was more along the lines of...

also, couldn't really be considered as spam if it was on the same line like Moses suggested, like the idea though

This is an interesting topic. The biggest problem I could see this causing is spam like mentioned above. Seeing the same messages over and over could become distracting as everyone logs in and out. As for wanting privacy when building if you don't feel like chatting as much there is always the option to of course leave the channel and set an "afk" message.
I wouldn't be completely opposed to the idea, I just think it would have equal gains and losses.

why can't we just say hi after joining?.... especially when you'll prolly do it anyway....
the only real benefit is for those trying to hide their login in which case there should just be a command to disable the login message.....
so with the exception of hiding logins i can't support this... you're just being lazy.... lol
