Do people go for aesthetics or functionality?

When I joined this server, I built my house near mikeybooy's, as he is the RL friend that introduced me to the server. However, it's on a world where people rarely go, so I haven't seen many active houses.

I hear a lot about cities and villages and stuff and it's got me wondering: What do most people build for, aesthetics or functionality?

Personally, a lot of my base is built around being able to stockpile things: I've got a farm that has wheat, carrots, potatoes, pumpkins, melons and sugar on it. I've also got a gold farm, a room where I can grow giant mushroom, a bit of an XP farm and a village with a lot of villagers.

I know there will be people that start projects specifically to farm, but do people prefer to have a nice looking house with no real functionality?

I try my best to do both. I like to make the house appeal to it's surroundings (biome) while thinking about the interior and how to make it as functional as possible.

Here's my old home from kag1999's Desert-based town

Here's my first home (good times)

I use to have leaves covering the roof but i needed saplings so i broke them :L

As you can see, the exterior is practically 100% aesthetics based. The interiors are kinda small, but not to the point where you feel claustrophobic and want to immediately leave. When I need space for storage I just dig rooms underground. I try not to compromise the aesthetics of the exterior.

I do more functionality. My house is made of a million rectangles.

i shoot for both with my builds..... i try to make my home as aesthetically pleasing as possible, and then i hollow out the ground underneath it and build massive farms  :D

ex: my castle

aside from the random farms outside where i was testing stuff i've tried to make it look nice.

but if you were to go inside you'd find a staircase going down, and that entire mountain it's sitting on is hollowed out with layer after layer of various farms right down to bedrock.

I love making things look realistic, as you can see here most of my buildings aren't for personal use and look more as if they were meant to be in a city setting rather than a single box atop a hill
