New players spawn in Global chat
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:28:11 am »
I've started to notice that a number of new players be one frustrated when they see everyone talking and no one is nearby to tell them how people can see what they say. If they start out in Global chat they are less likely to leave forever and stay for a while. They may even donate to Opticraft, which is good. One of a few downsides is: spambots, they will be mod annoying because they will have spawned in global too(if they have not joined and learned prior to the occation.) Honestly it isn't that hard to kick a spamming player and the server can kick them anyways. My point being that if the new guests spawnin Global you are more likely to earn money to keep the server running. Thank you for your time, Love Megamoltar. :)

Well we constantly have a message saying how to talk globally, and they spawn with a book telling them to talk in global. There used to not used to not be any channels, and those super spammy people are annoying, they come on the server once, spam it up with IPs and leave. With the local channel we don't get annoyed with it nearly as often.

I suppose it is a lesser of two evils. As Crzy said, there are the spammers, but there are also the noobs who won't read the rules, get frustrated when nobody can hear them, and ragequit. Personally, I think the noobs are the lesser of the evils.

We can't honestly be expected to accommodate for the ignorance of people.

The rules are there for a reason. To be read and followed.

Or, in the HUD thing you get when you log on, it could say" you are in [L] chat.
Type /ch g so everyone can hear you"

Great idea!
Even though, what of people that are new to Minecraft completely? They won't know much anything, let alone rules, block, andmaybe even how to type. I'm just saying why not try it for one day, there is no need to keep it if it causes more harm than help, Thank you for your time and opinions which I love hearing as always. :)

Why not just add a chat filter that blocks messages with IP addresses?

Then this suggestion could work with the spammer problem greatly reduced.

this would be hard because ips are read in many different ways, because some IPs are domains (smp.opticraft.net) instead of 99.99.99.99 . So if someone tried to put a youtube link in chat it would block it.

I made this topic a few months back. The two best solutions we came up with were(no particular order):
1.Create a new channel, make people by default join it, and then people could join the channel if they want to help with new people, and leave it if they dont. If it were up to me, i would make this channel "Help" with an [H] and make it &8, dark gray.
2.
Or, in the HUD thing you get when you log on, it could say" you are in [L] chat.
Type /ch g so everyone can hear you"
The main feedback was "local is default so spammers dont annoy global."

That's why I posted it, I never saw any change and decided it was worth another shot, because I love the idea.

I agree, If we let them start in global chat instead of local chat, they would COMEPLETELY miss/skip the rules and just start talking to people and building. Of course, as you said, this could keep them from ragequiting, But no serious player would actually ragequit, so therefore, we only get the players that would like to play and not grief and break the rules. This kinda filters out the good players from the bad players a little. Anyways, would you HONESTLY ragequit JUST because you couldnt talk to anyone, or would you read the rules? If we can figure it out, so can other new players.

Honestly, I would just leave (not ragequit) if i was tryin to get help/talk to other players and couldn't talk with anyone.

Well, there are a lot of players who didn't get mad and leave, that fact that we have probably over 200 people who play regularly, much more if you count everyone who ever built a home and really played opti for a while. My point is, all these people stayed. Why do we need more people who will spam, grief, and advertise for 5 minutes and be banned?
