I need help with old equipment
« on: November 17, 2012, 12:11:05 pm »
Hello everyone,

I have a old camcorder that I have used for 5 years, and I need to transfer film on a cassete to my PC. The camcorder has a usb cable, but it does not show up under 'Computer' in the libraries.

[DANGER!!DANGER!! HUGE IMAGES!! DANGER!!DANGER!!]

This is the cassete:

The cassete is an old 8mm Video Cassete mad by SONY.

This is my camcorder:

I want to find a way to do this without buying any expensive equipment or downloading anything that could be harmful, because my Dad's Virus Protection just expired, and he hasn't renewed it yet. Help is very much appreciated, thanks!

the giant blurry images are kinda useless tbh

what would be helpful is like the camera make/model

and you'd prolly have better luck searching google than asking here, most people here prolly dunno what a casette is...

anywho try searching on google something like "<insert camera type here> transfer to pc" or "<insert camera type here> transfer from cassete to pc" would proly have better luck

assuming the camera is capable of doing what you want and the cords are the correct type for it, then it should pop up in your "computer"

seeing as you said that isn't the case i'd assume it's not installing the drivers (if it's an old camera it probably came with a cd to do this unlike an iphone where it comes built in). so i'd look around for the cd assuming you might have it, otherwise you can "usually" download the drivers from the manufacturers website, that is if the camera isn't so old they've stopped supporting them.

good luck, hope that helps

Kag, edit the first img tags to "[img height=100"
Also, try and find any drivers the camcorder might've came with

FIXED

what would be helpful is like the camera make/model
SONY InthoLITHIUM Handycam Vision SteadyShot CCD-TRV608 NTSC video Hi8

so i'd look around for the cd assuming you might have it, otherwise you can "usually" download the drivers from the manufacturers website, that is if the camera isn't so old they've stopped supporting them.
no cd; no driver for windows 7, vista, or mac... only has driver for xp

Kag, edit the first img tags to "[img height=100"
thx

Also, try and find any drivers the camcorder might've came with

Well since you kno there's drivers for xp I'm gonna assume you found them seeing as its an old camera I'm not surprised if there aren't drivers for vista/7 you can always try installing the xp drivers but that's a crap shoot. Otherwise your kinda shit outa luck, I'd try the xp drivers n cross ur fingers really tight else you may need to find a computer with xp or install it

Ill look it up tomorrow wen I'm not on my phone, see if I can find a better solution

*edit*

so according to this http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-matrix.pl?upd_id=1452

there's drivers for windows 2000, xp, me, 98

you can download them all here
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=CCDTRV608&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

and the camera was discontinued on the newer operating systems, like i figured, so your kinda screwed for an easy solution.

what you can do however, **if you have windows 7** is download a "virtual pc" from microsoft that will let you run xp within windows 7

you can download the virtual pc from microsoft here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

and heres some instructions on how to set it up and make it all work
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

basically you would need to install/setup the virtual pc, run it, and then within the virtual pc you would go download/install the drivers for your camera.

assuming all goes well you can then upload the photos onto your computer and transfer them to a folder within windows 7 for easy access.

it's tricky, convoluted, and really annoying work around. but since software tends not to be backwards compatible it's kinda the only option, unless installing the xp drivers somehow works for you

gl with this annoying task.
