   Yeah, but keep in mind there are people who can:

   A: Incinerate the books
   B: Drop them and let them despawn
   C: die and get the books despawned
   D: ALL OF THE ABOVE :O

  Maybe a good way to do this is to just do what boshi said: Have bookshelves and chests, and add only trustworthy people you know who won't grief or steal the books.

This seem that it would be really hard to program and the books could get despawned so how about just a public book chest you can put your book in and take another out.
