The common theme here is that i need chat. My chat overlaps my game so i usually leave it off
i however found a mod to adjust the chat size, could i install this?

When in-game, or on the main menu, hit "options" -> "video settings" -> "gui scale"
Keep on pressing gui scale untill you have found the right size for you, I tend to use normal. This will change the size of your hotbar and crafting area but it is not a big difference in my opinion.
