Notch has announced on Twitter that 1.8 has been leaked. He is alright with everyone using it, as long as they get it from the leaked url (http://assets.minecraft.net/1_8-pre2/minecraft.jar) they are hosting (link to Minecraft Jar file download).
Simply open up your /AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/bin and replace the minecraft jar file with the leaked one.
We're running a "for fun" test server for 1.8.
Ip: beta.opticraft.net:25566
This is a simple vanilla server. Login and have fun. IT IS TEMPORARY!
Make a backup of your old minecraft.jar!

Just went for it, it is okay, but world generation sucks and I didn't see any villages or supermassive shrooms.
But meh.

In my brief play I saw four villages and in my first night i saw an enderman.
I think it is quite likely i will disable villages in SMP. They really serve no purpose right now. They just make the game a whole lot easier, as you get a shitload of free wheat from them

Make a backup before you replace it!
You shouldn't need to worry about a backup (assuming you don't mind losing achievements or mods). Every time you delete/create a new minecraft folder, it updates automatically through minecraft.net and being that this isn't official, the latest it will update to is 1.7.3(?).

Correct - but this is just a temporary fun/bug finding server. IF you notice bugs, tell notch!

Looked on MC wiki. On survival, it makes Enders half radius to attack you when you have it. One creative, right clicking an ender with one will despawn it.

It looks as if a bug has caused the world to become extremely laggy/buggy - causing clients to suffer massive FPS lag and the server to experience heightened CPU usage.
As a result i've reset the world.
The old world can be downloaded from http://beta.opticraft.net/world.tar.gz - Try it out in single player. If it causes FPS lag there, please report the bug to Mojang - This is quite a critical bug.

This is impossible to play on as xp makes it lag very hard. Is there a way you can disable xp Optic?

These little green/yellow orbs that you pick up from the ground, but they are bugged at the moment, as they do nothing when you pick them up apart from continuously fill a bar.

not from what ive seen. I've set it to creative now, as there is no XP in it as far as im aware

i have to say crative is rubbish compared to survival :/, i dislike creative i dont find it interesting

Classic is still better TBH, as it is always day, + no mobs and its easier to get materials you need... (Infi-stack)

Few mods can fix those issues claw. But i hate the flying interface, its crap.

Possibly not flat land, I like beta's terrain, but flying really is rubbish.

There is a bug in 1.8 with furnaces if you use a furnace it will remove all your coal and then crash the client.
